    RE: 50% of each Windy.

The fights cost us £30 return each all in. Have a look at the flightchecker at www.moneysavingexpert.com.

You might want to mention to the lads that our arrival passed through a narrow channel where a very enthusiastic spaniel took great interest in our bags.

Be careful not to be too far out, it's a working city so there's no pleasant half hour strolls to the attractions. A central location would really help.

The naughty night-life isn't hard to find but it's not as cheap as you'd expect. All three Baltic capitals have looked at Prague and jumped on the bandwagon.

Food can be bought cheaply and there's no rubbish. I noticed pizzas at a quid in one take away window. Sit down meals are good value too and the service is excellent.

The occupation museum is a must. Give yourself a good two hours to take it all in. By the end of it the weight of all those years of oppression is tangible. It's a real eye-opener.

The people are dignified and respectful and welcome you as equals. It's hard to believe they spent so long under the heels of the Soviets and Nazis. Around the turn of the nineties the Soviets decided the Latvians had got ahead of themselves in declaring their independence and sent tanks into the centre of Riga. 80,000 people from the outlying districts turned up to confront them. Get in!

There's a beautiful monument in the central square representing free Latvia which was nicknamed the Travel Agency, God knows how it survived. Anyone caught laying flowers at its base would be sent off to the labour camps but still the locals would sneak out at night with posies. They change the guard there on the hour.

You get the feeling the whole place is still holding its breath with all but the under twenties almost unable to believe they finally have their country back. I'd say ask the lads to show them some respect mate and you'll get more from your visit.
