    "Night watchman my @rse"

Because I think that the concept is a whole load of ****** (a bit like professional footballers who can't kick well with both feet). Him indoors was trying to justify the nightwatchman concept to me.

Now before you all jump on thinking I'm a dizzy bird who knows nowt about cricket ... I have watched a bit ... and of the bits I've watched, I've frequently seen a nightwatchman come in & get out .... end result, another one comes in & invariably gets out .... great tactics???

Why not just put your best batsman in (who is in theory good enough not to get out for 12 balls)... or is there some frightening thing about the final horrible unfaceable 12 balls of a cricket innings that are completely different from any preceding overs in an entire innings ??

Happy to be educated (but probably won't agree!) :D

I think the 'night-watch man' is complete and utter B*ll*cks. Like you say, they could face an over and get out on the 6th ball, they hardly score any runs. The single here and there and a 4 if there lucky :D . Next morning they come and either get bowled straight away or get a few more runs and then get out. Waste of time if you ask me. Might aswell put an accomplished batsman in to face the last few balls, got a better chance of surviving at the crease.

For what it's worth in my opinion under most circumstances they're a good idea. It's a percentages game really, there's nothing to be gained by putting an established batsman in late in the day as he'll only have to restart his thought processes again the next day. Whereas, theres everything to lose.

I think the fact that it's always been done for years makes it right most of the time. An evolved tactic stands a much better chance of success than a good alternative idea.

I think it needs some Paul D research

Nightwatchmen out in the 3 overs at the end of a closing innings / at the start of a re-opening innings
vs - just send the next man on the list in.

Until somone shows me some evidence; it's still a load of ****** ... and even then I'll need convincing over a couple of pints. :D

In fact the concept of the "nightwatchman" is a good one. Stats are difficult to analyse but on the whole support its use.

Avoid having to play yourself in twice

Once late in the afternoon, in dodgy light, with a **** a hoop fielding side, then again next morning with a rested and fresh side. Send someone expendable in instead.

But then what do I know. I never get out.

    Wasted wicket though?

    Send someone expendable in??

But he gets out.... and if he doesn't he's there in the morning interfering with the batting order. Either way it's no good.

    It's still ******.

    My record was 14.4 overs

As a number 11 against Houghton Main, great sledging from Ernie et al, Towser and Wilko trying to bounce me out, Brighty bowling lollipops that you could defend easily but not score off.

The great Mr Archer was bowled off the 4th ball of the last over. We lost and I was 0 not out.

No comment about Gerald, except to say he was once out first ball, opening the innings, reverse sweeping, caught at third man, or was it fine leg???????

    RE: Still not convinced

Well, you think like Steve Waugh who I think stopped using them. But Ponting re-introduced their use (as most teams do). I'll go with the majority view of the professionals on this one.

Not as wasted as the top order batsman getting out

    They often stay in.

All depends on the match situation really.

    Nope

The night before he defends with all his worth.

The next morning he attempts to t**t the ball to all parts before getting out, tiring out and frustrating the bowlers in the meantime. It doesn't always work, but people who know more than I do (and obviously far more than you do) think it's a good idea.

We can discuss this in intricate detail on Saturday. We are boring people to death on here.
