Been using torrents and downloading for a couple of years now.

Just got a letter from Orange yesterday about a download I did last week and a warning.

Should I stop, anyone received a warning before?

Anyway of not getting caught anymore!!

ignore the letter, it was in the news not long ago that they will only send letters out and wont cut you off, they wont even take you to court for it, if you use the right sort of software am sure they will never no

then i can see where your point.the old home taping is killing music thing.
however,as mentioned in a previous thread,i go to a lot of gigs, from stadiums right down to
pub gigs.buy merchandise and even buy bands a pint if i can.
i don't earn a fortune and from what i'm told the money bands actually receive from cd sales is a very small fraction
of what you actually pay for a cd.plus i'm a clumsy fecker and cd's always get lost or broke where as my phone hardly leaves
    my side.

if it wasn't aimed at me then ignore all of the above.

not aimed at you mate. i was just saying, i know alot of people who go on the hmv website, write down the top 20 albums, then go on certain torrent sites, and down load them, free of charge.

i was just wondering which companies were gonna start sending warning letters out. by my guess, at least 50% of internet users regulary download 'free' music / films etc etc.

i personally love my music but havent bought a cd for 5 years. 'my mate' gets em all.

    i know what ya mean.
my point was if everyone went out and actually saw bands instead of just listening
then it wouldn't be just the arena filling acts getting the recognition they deserve.
bands would get teh money they deserved instead of the record company raking it in.

I bet they don't even listen to it properly

A few of my mates at work just leave their systems downloading 24/7 and they don't even watch or listen to a fraction of it. It's a waste of electricity if nothing else.

There are plenty of cheap CD's / DVD's out there and even the lastest releases are quickly discounted. As for computer software, the Web is full of legitimately free stuff that is more good enough for home use.

    Easiest answer....

... Say you're sorry, and ask Orange to send you, lets say, Paul McCartney's bank account number and sort-code. That way you can pay him his royalty money, directly.

use private bit torrents sites, and

make sure you enable encryption in whatever client you use, that way your isp knows how much your downloading but not what your downloading.

been using torrent sites for years and struggle to keep in my 40gb limit yet not recieved any letters. not used any public sites like isohunt etc for about 3 years though.

    Agreed on some points

CD's can be obtained at a reasonable price if you look hard enough. However, CD is no longer the most convenient format for many modern music consumers. It sadly remains the case that high quality DRM-free portable music files cannot be yet be purchased at a reasonable price. From the online music download stores, a full album in mp3 or similar, costs more than a CD from the discount CD sites. This despite the massive decrease in cost of provision - no disc to manufacture, package and ship to the end user, just a few poxy MB of bandwidth.

DVD's are not something I frequently buy. Unlike listening to albums, there are very few films I would watch over and over, so there is little point in me buying DVD's unless they cost less than a trip to the cinema. The ones I have, have been watched once and now just waste shelf space.

Software, on the other hand, I agree entirely. 12 months ago I had a hooky copy of Windows laden to the hilt with expensive software freely downloaded from dubious sources. About this time last year I decided to try to find free alternatives to all my commonly used programs and see if I could last a month without using proprietary software. It proved remarkably easy. So in December last year I decided to go the whole hog and ditch the hooky Windows in favour of the freeware Ubuntu OS.

Now that isn't for everyone by any stretch. It's not as polished as Windows and you need to do stuff from the commandline more. But it is secure, fast, resource-light and easy on the eye. Also, most of the programs I'd taken to using in Windows (GIMP, Open Office, Firefox, Thunderbird, Avidemux, Audiacity, Sopcast, VLC player) were either bundled with Ubuntu, or readily available for Linux. There is no longer any proprietary software on my PC at all and I've never looked back.

    Also

Use a torrent search site that supports SSL encryption, i.e. has a URL starting https://

I believe Peer Guardian isn't available for Vista though.

    Or... don't download dodgy stuff!
