Looking forward to it - but the pre-season optimism will no doubt have been knocked out of us by 3:20!
Its my 77th...and there,s no one as excited as me... are the nets up,is the pitch marked ouut, is the ball blown up, has the ref come has the other side come What the ref,s forgot his whistle!!!! COME ON BARNSLEY....
Back in August 1968 I was a giddy schoolboy going off to start my first season as a Barnsley fan , home to Barrow ( a blast from the past for all us old fogies !! ) . After a couple of minutes , Johnny Evans had put us one up , Heaven on Earth . Unfortunately , Barrow hit back with three goals . We got a second ( through Allen Bradbury I think ) , but the day ended in disappointment for me . As I trudged back to the bus station , with my late father , I couldn't understand why all these other people had been out shopping and not cheering the lads on down at Oakwell !! That day I started my love affair with the club and the start of each new season brings the same level of excitement and expectation . There is no logic in it , but I don't care . I love the club despite all the heartbreak it's brought me . That schoolboy from 1968 will be down at Oakwell again today , his Dad will be watching from his vantage point in Heaven . Both wanting three points and a wonderful display of attacking football . Both will be back even if they don't get it . COME ON YOU REDS !!!!
Yep. And even better since I learnt that the roadworks at Chesterfield have been taken away. You Reds!!
Superb post Brought back memories of my first ever match, 21st October 1978. I was taken to see us play Wigan as a belated 11th birthday present. David Speedie made his debut & we drew 0-0. The nearest we came to a goal was Ally Miller hitting the bar from a free kick on the edge of the area in front of the Ponty.
RE: Back in August 1968 I still wonder, when walking back from the match, why all these people are walking back from shopping - particularly those who ask how they went on!
Could be That they don't have an understanding partner or enough spare money . Back in 1968 , I was convinced that there was no acceptable excuse . After all , this was my club , my team , my people !! What could possibly be more important than Barnsley Football Club ???
RE: Could be Don't think ar lass would even think of stopping me going to games - in fact the other year when I mentioned we might not be renewing season tickets she was astounded - she just accepts its something I do every other week just as she has her things that she does.
Same here In fact , The Boss would book me in for a visit to the psychiatrist if I didn't get my season ticket !!!!
My sentiments entirely ! When we've won , he's the nicest man on the planet . When we've lost .....................
RE: My sentiments entirely ! So don't you go Crystal? I thought you did. Ar lass usually keeps an eye on here (well t'other site but you know what I mean) to see how we are going on just so she can prepare for what mood I'll be in for the evening!
