Am going to look at a 1997 Golf this aft with a view to buying. I know they have a good reputation but would like to hear from someone who's owned one as to what they're like to run/repair etc.

They'll go forever. Just don't go near Hayselden's for servicing.

    Which model is it ?

    1997 1.6 CL

With 50,000 miles on the clock and 12 months MOT. Been driving Polos up to now but want something a bit bigger and refuse to drive anything that isn't German.

Had a Mk IV 1.6 SE for years

never a hint of bother. Only got rid 'cos it was proving to be a bit small.

On me 3rd Golf, all been fine. Only probs I've ever had have been thro' servicing issues with franchised dealer.

Sure some websites like whatcar etc will tell you specific issues to look out for on a car that age, but as a reliable everyday car I can't see you getting anything better.

    Ta very much.

Unless the car I see this aft is totally wnak I'll probably buy it. Always wanted a Golf Mk2 GTI since I was a kid but this might have to do for now :)

Mek sure it's had it's timing belt done within the last four years (although wi it being a bit older it may not have the current cr@ppy plastic pulleys and tensioners).

Other checks pretty standard, mechanics, electrics, wear and tear on interior etc.
