Anyone have a ‘cherished number’ number plate and get aggro from police

I was unsure whether or not this post is OK here as it is not football related. I suppose if its in the wrong place someone will give me some abuse and remove the thread !

According to DVLA there is only one legal font for number plates and it is illegal to use incorrect spacing and screws etc to distort the appearance. However, Yorkshire apparently has the highest proportion of personal plates and there are loads out there with the wrong fonts and incorrect spacing etc. I suspect that often it boils down to the local police force’s attitude. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of how tolerant our local police are to such ‘illegal’ plates

We had a case a few years ago where one guy got into trouble for his number plate. It was in the papers as he was apprehended 3 times, and I think he was fined and threatened with even stiffer penalties.

I don't know of any others, but, judging by some of the more outrageous formations I've seen recently I would very much doubt that there is much control.

Last week I spotted a plate that was impossible to work out exactly what it SHOULD have said. I reckon it's only a matter of time before there is a clampdown.

And a good thing too. It's a legal identification mark, nothing else, and I don't agree to them being messed with.

I think you will find that it isn't necessarily tolerance these days. Most of the traffic cars are fitted with ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) systems these days which are set to read correctly spaced number plates. If yours isn't spaced correctly you are likely to get pulled as it will flag up as unrecognisable. ANPR cameras are also located on the M621 into Leeds and also on the A64 heading towards York near Tadcaster. Wakefield's CCTV system is also linked in.

More and more people are therefore likely to get pulled, I think it is a producer for the first pull put then gives a £30 fine on any subsequent pulls, the police can also advise the DVLA to take the plate off the owner for persistent offences.

    Can't think of anything naffer.

They should just cut up all the letters and rearrange them to form the word DICKHE4D.

I believe its just a fine (no points). I have purchased a plate which doesn't need any modifications to spacing, or strategically placed screws, other than it would look nicer in a different font. It would still be obvious what the registration was, but don't know whether to chance it.

I also liked the idea of a badge

I also thought about having a badge of toby tyke on the plate as well (instead of an england flag!) but apparently thats illegal as well, and so is having a border, and words on the border

    When that one came out......

....I entertained the notion for 0.165 seconds. It's a tidy one, no fannying about, but it's still like wearing one of these -

T7KCS was sold on ebay a few years ago for a few hundred

With a screw stuck in the middle of C and a different font this would easily pass as TYKES. however, i have never seen it driving around, so it probably did not come to barnsley

    One day

a vehicle with an altered plate is going to be involved in some serious incident and the role or reliability of the eyewitness will be called into question.

Altered plates that can then be transformed back to normal lend themselves to all kinds of potential problems.

It's wrong, and it should be clamped down on[IMG]

    RE: One day

perhaps altered plates are more distinctive for an eyewitness to remember. Normally they are altered to form a word. A word is possibly easier to remember than a series of unconnected numbers and letters

    Didn't know that

I had always wondered what those cameras on the way into leeds were for.

So what sort of things are they supposed to pick up on? Do you know anybody who's been caught by them?

    yeah

they should make them all the same like they make murderers wear the same clothing for eye witnesses.

To be fair i think the shady fonts that make them difficult to read should be banned totally but for me a plate that spells a word is more easily remembered than a random group of numbers so would make ID from a witness easier. Take for example you saw a car do a drive by and got a quick half a second glance at the plate and it was DL54 *** - u missed that bit. Now think if it had been M1NGE. See my point? I have actually seen that plate on the m1 years ago and i still remember it now.

    RE: yeah

I accept that M1NGE is very memorable [IMG]

But many plates are now using black dots to turn C into E or even wierdly C to 3.

H is being narrowed and blocked to become A. 4 is being tilted and black dotted to become A.

F is being dotted to become E. 6 is mutating into G and vice versa.

8 is being yellow dotted to become the letter O.

The point I am really making is that many number plates are becoming too far removed from what they really are, by reforming the actual characters.

And THAT is where the problems start.

But if you remember the word and tell the police that, how can they translate that to what the number is, let along prove it?

Yep, West Yorkshire Police are apparantly testing hand held versions at the moment too, once proved they'll be rolled out to all of the beat bobbies.

    Its also illlegal for

the Number Plate makers to make one knowing it will be used for road use. I think you have to sign a declaration that non conforming plates are used for show only .

    I'll buy two sets

I don't particularly want to break the law, but think i will get two sets of plates made up. I'll put the ones with the 'illegal' font on. But if i get stopped once (slap on the wrist) i'll put the proper ones on - i may get away with it for a few years (or a few hours !)
