I've got an assessment centre on Thursday to be a police officer. I've done really well to get this far, but now it means so much that I'm really working myself up over it. I struggle badly to control my nerves no matter what I tell myself.

Everyone deals with it different ways

Isuffered badly with nerves , panic attacks when I was younger - still do to a certain extent. Not as bad now - bit more confident as I've grown. Just got to tell yourself you're good enough - you've done well to get this far by the sounds of it.

Deep breathing exercise maybe, the old one about picturing everyone in their underwear and so on! Just believe in yourself and go for it - good luck!

I have always suffered the same mate, all I can say is believe in your own ability or you wouldn't be in the interview, and take a good deep breath before yo deliver

    Use those nerves positively

They won't expect you to be without nerves, it shows you want it.

Prepare as fully as you can with the information they've given you. If you've done that the rest will fall into place. Nerves aren't all that bad...makes you do that little bit extra preparation to compensate.

    Totally Agree with Hicksy

Being nervous shows you feel passionate about it and want to do well.

Having played football and cricket many times over the years, in big games I was a bundle of nerves beforehand. I was scared of letting myself and my mates down, by making a mistake. Rather than make me play badly, the nerves helped my game. Made me concentrate, improved my performance, made me take it more seriously. Feeling nervous is natural.

If you appear nervous in the interview, it will show you care. If you come across as super cool and relaxed, it might, just might, appear like over-confidence.

    Good luck and best wishes.

when you meet the interviewers, shake hands with a firm grip and most important... make eye contact !!!! when asked any question, count to three and then give your answer it gives you time to compose yourself. (unless the question is "would you like a coffee?" in which case you'd look like a 'tard")

    Yes - I have

Just remember that your assessors are human, just like yourself.

They will have their own personal and domestic problems, just like you.

They will be married, or single - may have had a row with their husband, wife, gay or straight partner that morning, and be wondering who will be walking the dog or preparing dinner.

Above all, no matter how scary they are - they all have to pull the chain and flush away their waste products, just asyou do.

Remember that - but try not to laugh when you do!

    Good luck.

Great points (suprisingly :)) from Hicksy and Stahlrost

Practical tip I would suggest would be to slow everything down a little. take a second before you respond to questions give you time to relax and shows confidence. Also slow your speech down slightly if you think you tak too quickly, I know I do

remember they want you to succeed just as much as you do. they are out to help, no trick questions. Dont be afraid to ask questions or for clarificaytion

Good luck, am sure you will be fine

    Dude,
Nerves are good. We all get them...so channel them into a positive thing. What it means is the situation you are in means something...
So concentrate on what you are doing....the nerves will get the adrenalin going....use that to keep you focused.
    Nerves=adrenalin=pumped up =postive attitude

Most important in that is POSITIVE..........

you are focussing on the possible failure

u need to stop that. Instead you need to visualise the assessment and it all going well and you doing great. Visualise the situations and also visualise been calm and handling them well.

Sounds a little crazy but it works.

Works for all the top pros in sport etc. Programming your brain and reinforcing your belief system. Once you already know you can do something you will be able to do it in real life.

Another trick i remember someone telling me was when they were nervous in public speaking. They had a paper clip and the when they held it they imagined the paper clip soaked all the nervous energy up - leaving them nerve free.

My other half went for the police and passed it all (only to get f*cked over by false information on her record which took 2 years to get off!). Talk about a nitemare. Shes not gone back since and pursued something different.

Have you gotten a credit check for yourself? If not do one sharpish and make sure there aint nowt on there that shouldnt be!! If there is you can get it recorded that its under investigation etc... She didnt find out until later. You can get the checks free on credit expert - just cancel it after the trial.

    not quite true

the assessors are all actors and they play their parts to a tee - abusive etc! Its quite tough going as they make the situations as real as possible.

He needs to be prepared for that. Just make sure you remain calm and just do your best bud and go through sme of the tips i put below.
