Laura has been suffering from really bad back ache for months and has just seen a Physiotherapist (6 months wait) who has said that her spine is curving in, and to the right, too much at the bottom and out at the top and making her hunchbacked at the shoulders. She is to be referred to the Orthopaedic Team as her hips and shoulders are not level.

    Hopefully the problem is not severe and can be rectified with exercises to improve posture which is what Physio has suggested for now.

    Just trying to find out how "common" this is in young/teenage girls and whether it is related to the Cystinosis/Ricketts.

    Will do.

    Don't worry, we're tough at this house.
    We've gotten used to getting unsettling news, between Christmas and Laura's birthday in March, as something crops up every year.

    As I say hopefully it's nothing too serious that can't be sorted but I'm trying to see if other Cystinotics have/or had similar problems. Have found a Worldwide forum on the American Cystinosis site which seems quite good as lots of the contributors are older patients than Laura.

    Crystal, I've suffered with this on & off for over twenty years. Most of the time it's fine, but when I suffer it's utter agony. Basically, your spine is kept straight by two sets of muscles either side working against each other and constantly pulling it taught - if the muscles at one side (left in my case) go into spasm, then the muscles on the other side have nothing pulling against them and pull the spine across to their side (think of one tug-of-war team suddenly giving up - the other side go shooting backwards!) Gives me a rather fetching 'lop-sided hips' appearance!! The pain can last up to a week. Just walking is a real test if it's a bad one -also getting in/out of cars isn't the most comfortable experience.

    How to avoid. In my case, lose some weight - big tum = big strain on lower back muscles! I had some physio on it a few years back and they gave me some exercises to help. Main two are;

    Lie on your back on a firm surface, draw both knees together up towards your head. Also stretch upper body forward and clasp arms below knees. PULL!!!!!!!!! You're basically trying to stretch out the spine by pulling it taut around the curve of your lower back.

    Lie flat on your back, twist upper body one way (left or right) and legs the other - imagine wringing out a wet towel or facecloth.

    Both these seem to help me. I can't offer any great comforting words. Luckily, I've not had a serious attack for a year or two now and can usually 'tell' if I'm putting myself at risk after heavy lifting or a day in the garden. At those times it's a hot Radox bath - seems to work.

    There's tons of stuff on t'internet if you google.

    Thanks

    Those exercises are basically what she has been shown to do with a couple of others. Laura has very lax muscle tone everywhere so it's more a case of developing musles rather than anything.

    Will keep googling.
