Just moved into a house and the bloke who had it before has left all the surround wiring in the corners of the room and cables what look like we're connected to an amp... is there only 1 cable that connect to surround sound or amp or will I have to buy a certain one yo reuse these wires?

    Thanks

Err...a bit unsure of what you are asking. Are you saying you want to connect multiple speakers to a Hi Fi amp or are you saying you have a surround sound receiver already for a surround system?
Recap...sorry if you already know this:

Dolby surround or DTS comes in 5:1 7:1
5:1 is Front left: Centre;: Front Right: Rear Left :Rear Right

7:1 is Front Left: Centre: Front Right: Rear Left: Rear Right: Rear Centre (5:1 simulates rear centre by sending equal levels to rear right and rear left ): Sub bass which boosts low frequencies These are often self powered amps with a phono (line level) output from the receiver/amp rather than a speaker output.

NOTE: You cannot connect multiple speakers to a single hi fi amp or you will get an impedance mismatch which may damage the amp!!!

You need to connect the respective pairs of leads from each speaker point to the surround sound receiver (amp) that is connected to your TV/ Humax/Cable/Satellite DVD player system.(Each speaker location is labelled on the back of the amp at the terminals .g. FrontR FrontL RearL RearR SubW etc.)

If these cables runs are hidden under carpets etc you will need a simple multimeter to flash them out to connect the correct pairs of leads to the relevant speaker out terminals on the amp. Make sure you connect + to + terminal and – to minus terminals or you get a woolly sound and loss of bass as well as losing the directional surround sound effects.

I have surround sound using a Yamaha RX- V387 AV Receiver Amp into very high quality speakers and use the front pair as Hi-Fi speakers connected via an amp switcher box to a high quality hi-fI Amplifier. AV surround sounds systems are very good but dont let anyone tell you they can do the job of Hi-Fi audio and AV surround sound equally well as dedicated systems.

    HTH!

Ha I use to be really clued up on technology mainly pcs but not anymore.... It was a 5.1 is it just a surround sound receiver I need then? Obviously speakers to attach and reuse the wires? The wires go from behind were the tv will be under floorboard up inside chimney breast and under upstairs floorboards into corners. ... personally would have used wireless but o well. Just thought if they are there might as well use em

isn't it a bit false economy though, shelling out £500+ for 5.1 speakers and an amp, just so you can use £50 of speaker cabling that's been left there?

Wireless OK but not that good. If wires are in place use 'em. Plenty of decent AV surround sound systems out there although £500 for AV receiver AND speakers sounds a bit low.

Yeah when I said 500+ I meant 500 for speakers plus amp. I picked up Q acoustics surround speakers and a Yamaha amp for £650

Q acoustics are the dog's bo**ox - budget prices (hi-fi wise at least) for high quality true hi-fi sound.
Richer sounds package below (Yamaha AV + SS Q acoustics speakers for £750 all in. Excellent !!.....
