We lost 6-3 to a very good Dutch side. They certainly lived up to the 'total football' reputation of their home country. They were a different class at times. Great game to be involved in and it was played in the right spirit. They're off into Barnsley tonight to sample the local culture (Walkabout/Chicago Rock!) so keep an eye out for 'em!
Dutch Masters Give BBSFC a Football Lesson BBSFC 3 Rotterdam 6 Basically we huffed & puffed and they passed the ball around us in neat triangles. We had a few chances in the 1st half as the dutch boys did a BFC and failed to capitalise on superior posession, limiting themselves to long range efforts. Steve mopping a few loose balls that got in behind the defense. After abart 30 mins BBSFC took a surprise lead when Rob beat off a defender to score a low shot past the dutch keeper. BBSFC took heart and played a bit better towards the end of the half but unsurprisingly the dutch equalised after BBSFC failed to clear the lines and the dutch forward poked a low shot into the corner. HT 1-1 BBSFC started the second half the brighter as an early cross from (adam?) was missed by the dutch defence, falling to an unmarked yours truly who was caught by surprise and lashed a shot wide of the post. Soon after a smart ball down the right from the tireless Ed? found the the slightly rotund Spartacus again on the right in behind the dutch defense. I hit a drive just wide of the post from inside the area with only the keeper to beat. BBSFC again took the lead after some smart work down the left found Rob who put in a low cross which I poked a weak shot under the keeper at the near post. Red Ferns early departure to his darts match resulted in the midfield losing valuable experience and dare I say mass and his absence was sorely apparant. The Dutch maestro's soon began to reap the rewards of there smart play, our defensive frailties with clever passing compared to our static 4-4-2 approach resulted in 4 quick goals mostly from the quick forwards getting in behind our defense. A Fantasic looping shot from the edge of the area gave steve no chance along with a couple of far post grass cutters and a smart near post header as the reds heads dropped. The uncompromising Rob went in for a Steve Cooper No 17 (The Rib Cage Crusher) type challenge resulting in the dutch midfielder collapsing in his own universe of pain!! A change for the reds to a 3-5-2 bolstered midfield as BBSFC rallied in the last 20mins after the dutch made it 6 with a near post tap in. A couple of chances fell our way notably to Richie, Rob and Harper before a long ball from midfield found me in space on the wing behind the dutch defence. A quick drag back found the on rushing Harper on the edge of the box. Eluding a couple of dutch defenders he beat the keeper with a low shot to restore some pride. FT 3-6 All in all a great game played in a true friendly spirit. The dutch guys were fantastic and very good if mature footballers. One of the Dutch players was a Charlton season ticket holder of 25 years and remembers our joint promotion when our chants were " I O Barnsley, Barnsley I O" The full size artificial surface at Dearne Valley is also fantastic and made the evening. Special mention to midfield dynamo Edd who ran tirelessly for 90 mins, my BBSFC MOTM, Shefftyke for passing us the contact details and Journo for sorting out the game. To all the BBSFC boys well done for turning up and giving the dutch a good game. If I have not mentioned your part its because I only look forwards!! and am fast approaching the age of senility!! Well done to all, I enjoyed it Hope you did.
"Red Ferns early departure... .to his darts match resulted in the midfield losing valuable experience and dare I say mass and his absence was sorely apparant..." Cheeky git What happened lads 6- 3?....6.. fu*in . 3 It was 1-1 when I left at 1/2 time...ff only jokeing ,they were a very good technical side, as you come to expect from dutch players. I think if it had been a competitive game it would have been tighter, but as it was it was a decent run out for us and gave a chance for a couple of the new guys to have a run out. Cheers to Allan and Paul for sorting it out and sorry that I couldn't be a"round" for longer hopefully see ya all soon Bill.. (Y) Always a pleasure never a chore.......
