Anyone know what the 'incident' was that caused the closure of the M1 this morning?

I was travelling up from Bucks with two passengers, taking them to Leeds. Had to divert off the M1 at Birdwell and took them on a tour of Barnsley to avoid the traffic queues, eventually rejoining the M1 other side of Darton. Having never seen the town before I heard the following comments: (the woman) "Barnsley looks quite nice doesn't it" and the other comment (the man) was "Don't think I will be bringing my wife up for a long weekend!".

Whatever it was it turned a three hour drive into a four hour one, including a couple of other holdups further south. Today was my first visit to Leeds in many years and it wasn't a pretty sight. The centre is alright of course (well, some of it is) but the outlying districts were just an urban wasteland. Glad I was there in the daytime!

Thanks, that is what I thought it was. I mentioned to my passengers that the high bridge between Dodworth and Birdwell is a popular jumping off point and suggested that something similar might have happened today. My local knowledge was quite useful in getting us through the chaos reasonably quickly

Had the same problem. Couldn't get on at Birdwell, ended up going via birdwell, Stainborough, dodworth, silkstone, cawthorne and back on at Bretton. Added more than an hour to my trip to work..still it's better than feeling like you want to jump off a bridge.
