This morning whilst I was in the bathroom my cat came to welcome me as usual, rubbing up against my legs and meowing, then she started having a fit. Low on her front paws, twitching and then shaking violently whilst going round in circles before falling on her side and shaking violently before slumping forwards in the corner, distressed cries and then afterwards she was stood for a while but unable, or unwilling to move.
    Very distressing thing to watch.
After a hour or so when she just didn't want to move from where she was laying she seems absolutely fine now, although insisting on being on my lap at every possible opportunity (as I type this she is laid on the desk between me and the keyboard).
Taking her to the vet this afternoon.

yes i used to have a dog that used to have fits on a regular basis, they can try and treat it with a drug called phenabarbetone or something like that.

In the end the fits became worse and worse and in the end he died whilst having a fit and he was only 3 years old.

All the best pal hopefully it was just a one off.

We had a 14 year old German Shepherd

She , too , had a fit . It was very distressing for her and the family to watch . With a very heavy heart , I took her down to the vets for her to be put out of her misery . Surprisingly , the vet suggested we try a course of treatment over three days to see if it would help . I was in two minds , whether to clutch at straws ( as I saw it ) , or let the grand old lady die with some much deserved dignity . This was on the Monday . I , very reluctantly , went with the treatment . By Thursday , she was back to her best and bestowed us with another three wonderful years , before finally succumbing to the inevitable at the grand old age of 17 .
We went with the vet's advice and I'm so glad we did . Hopefully , your cat will receive the same level of care.
    Kev

    OK cheers

Well she's 14 and not been known to have had a fit before. Really thought that was the end for her, even afterwards when she was stood up it appeared as though she had some partial paralysis which has thankfully gone.

    Had a labrador with epilepsy

When he had fits we used to pop him in a dark room, lie him down and wait for it to end. Then he's be right as rain.

    Aye...

We used to have a cavalier king charles spanial, and he used to have loads (roughly every other week at least), which apparently is very common in these types of dogs.

Very distressing to see, and it really upset me the first tie he had one as I didn't know what was going on.

However, he died years ago (not related to fits BTW), he had a heart murmur and was also infected in his chest and had a heart attack, not that this is relevant, just wanted to say, that fits, although strains the heart, does not very often cause a pet to die of it.

At the time, there was nothing available (drug wise), and so all we could do was lie him down, and get really close to him and keep talking and trying to comfort him (obvisouly keeping your face away from his mouth or any other possible harming parts, as it is stressfull for the pet) whilst trying to stop him from standing up. (oh and keep bright lights away from there eyes)

Funny thing is, he always new when he was going to have one, as he always came up to you and start clawing at your leg, and after the first few, we always new then when it was about to start.

They usually lasted around a minute up to about 3 minutes, and afterwards, he would just get up and run off, and you wouldn't have known anything had happened.

Not sure why I went into it all, but suppose, thinking about it, if it were you yourself, you would want someone to grab you and comfort you, so maybe at least you could try that, making that cat feel as though your there with him/her.

one thing for sure, very unpleasant to watch, oh and, if you have kids in the same room, or knocking about who doesn't understand what fits are, keep them out of the way (if possible trying not to let them see any of it), and possibly explain it to them before the next one (hopefully there isn't a next one), just in case they happen to witness it...

    Good luck anyway

You'll be surprised at how common it is and usually it is eased by medication.

    Was it Robert Peel

    or Lord Salisbury?

They are my favourite all time PMs.

I hate Gladstone, well, who doesn't, grrr, my blood boils even now when I think of the debacle over the Irish Question. Damn it sir, we'll never give the Irish Home Rule, think what a mess they would make of it.

    RE: Was it Robert Peel

    I'm not keen on Peel.
He invented the modern police force.
    The facist, or summat.

I like how he died after falling off a horse though.
I bet he was trying to bum it at the time.

I know a dog that used to fit regularly

One of my mates has 2 black labs and one of them was having a fit about once a month.

Seems to be something in his food that was triggering it as since they changed to giving him a "natural" food rather than tinned stuff he has been fine. other dog never had a problem - mate thinks it was some E number additive that was triggering it

If you recently changed your moggies diet it might be the culprit.

    Thanks Cazi

From some of the comments here it does appear more common than I thought.

I was going to send you a PM.

Anyway - off to the vets in 45 mins so I'll see what they say.
