How reliable/cheap to run/cheap to insure are they?

Talking about Golf's from N reg upwards.

The 1.4 Golf is one of the worst Golfs in history. DO NOT BUY.

There is a severe lack of power, and the economy isn't that good. The Golf is a heavier car than the old Escort/Astra, and the 1.4 struggles with it, let alone with passengers and luggage. The 1.4 didn't sell well, and most fleet vehicles were 1.6 (which shows this is a better car for the money).

Go for the 1.6 at least, they were more popular and there should be more about. The economy is more or less the same as the 1.4 because it doesn't have to revved as much to get the power out of it.

If your budget allows, some of the Turbo Diesel engines were pretty good. Decent economy and power - but expect to pay a slight premium over the petrol equivalent.

Insurance wise, the 1.4/1.6 will be very similar, with the TD a touch more (say £50 max). Reliability wise, they're not too bad, but buying at this age is all down to the previous owners and service history (+ receipts). Plenty of good private specialists for VW, so don't be put off a service book stamped by a specialist, a lot cheaper and usually still use Genuine parts.

Overall, plenty about, so buy the best condition you can afford, and make sure it has POWER STEERING!!

    Thanks for that.

Is the 1.4 a definite no go then? Not really up on Golf's or any cars really, so any opinions/previous experiences are much appreciated. :)

Unless you want a death trap, keep away from the Rover Metro/100.

A Golf is a pretty sound bet to be honest. Good local dealer (Hayseldens) plenty of private specialists around south yorkshire and on the Internet. Well built car, with good features and is classier than a similar age Escort/Astra.

Have a look on www.autotrader.co.uk and you should find loads.

Or enquire about her brother's diesel one. So long as it's a Turbo Diesel.

    Thanks

I did cringe a bit when I heard "Rover" as I haven't heard much positives about them in the past.

Basically, a car that's reliable, and will be easy/comfortable to drive will do me, and of course cheap insurance wise.

I have the bike too, which is only £300 a year fully comp, but I guess a car will be at least double that.

Get a Nissan Almera or a Focus (or a Primera / Mondeo / Carina if you want bigger)

The Mrs has a V reg.

Brilliant on insurance and fuel - compared to my mondeo that is.

She pays about £190 a year fully comp with both of us on.

I hate driving it as my gran can run faster!

What's expensive for spares and repairs- a Golf?

If you find it is, you're going to the wrong places. Try Eurocarparts and German, Swedish and French. Both have branches in Sheffield (Hillsbrough) and Leeds. Or simply their on-line websites......

    1.6 Golf Driver (MarkII).....

I had one of these and it was the absolute mutts' nuts. Totally reliable - and i once even transported 400 bricks from Huddersfield to Brierley in it. Mind you, it felt like i was driving on ice on occasions! But what a belter of a car it was. When i moved to London i kipped in it for over 2 weeks until i found some proper digs (getting sentimental now... sniff!)
