Around Hoyland, Elsecar, Wentworth? I have this cracking old photographic postcard from pre WW1 and am looking where to place it in my collection. Thanks. If anyone is tempted to reply 'Barrow', let me pre-empt that by saying 'tharracock'. This is a largely non-football post.
I thought that too, Birdwell or the village because of the colliery (seen in Kes). The primary in that area was Birdwell Juniors I think, a feeder for Kirk Balk. The only other school now, I think, is an infants just before you reach the village. There is also an area known as Barrow or 'The Barrow' just down from Wentworth towards Elsecar Res. I'm thinking it's related, as when I bought this card it turned up in a Wentworth search.
Those lads may well be the Great/Grandads of our school mates, gary! Look at how some are turned out, they must have had nowt.
It used to be between wentworth and harley on the main road Between around the bend or just after it. An all boys school. Thats if my googling has taken me to the right school
That was my guess too. I had a little search, then thought it would be nice to pose it to the board and share the picture. Somebody might spot a relation in there.
I'm sure there'll be somebody on here who's family went there, there seems to be someone on here who has a connection to everything in south yorkshire. Feel free to post up any other random old photo's that you've got, they're fascinatiing to look at. Here's confirmation of where Barrow school was

try getting in touch with.... Geoffrey Howse. He has done a good many books on the history of the Hoyland area. He may be able to help you, he will most certainly be interested in the picture. I have met the guy, my Mum introduced me to him. We were in Walkers Newsagent in Hoyland , he happened to be in too, Nice bloke. My Mum got me one of his books one year and he signed it for her too. Some may not find that impressive I know, but being a Hoyland lad I was well impressed with it one Christmas. I would be interested to hear your results with that photo matey.
The people ones are quite interesting. I have just scanned one of the festivities at Elsecar following the declaration of peace in WW1.
Re: try getting in touch with.... I know Geoffrey. He still has a house on Manor Way and also lives near me in London. I'm carrying out a conservation/re-housing project on my 450+ collection. Scanning them as I go, with a plan to create a website or facebook page. I also plan to leave the collection at Hoyland Library where it can be seen by appointment. Will be giving a disc of scans to Geoffrey as an image resource for his books. Someone's Nan?
it would be wonderful... to see a selection of your photo's on here , maybe half a dozen or so once a week. That would be lovely mate.
Re: it would be wonderful... I wouldn't mind, if it didn't bother others. My collection is based on my wanderings as a kid between the two big Wentworth houses. Half of my cards are Wentworth Village and estate, simply because more cards were made - the Fitzwilliams loved to show it off, then you had great photographers like Edmund Scrivens making large series. Anything you could ask from Wentworth, I probably have at least one example. I've housed my cards so the collection begins at Wentworth, then goes down to Elsecar, of which I have 40 or so, then Jump which are rare and seldom come up and go for big bucks when they do. I have about 4. I don't collect Harley, but I should start. Then Hoyland, I have 50 or so. Platts Common and Blacker hill are very rare, I don't have any. One of the Prince Albert came up once and went for over £70. Then Hoyland common, Birdwell and Tankersley. Then through Rockley to Stainborough Park and Wentworth Castle. I have a few of Worsborough Village and some of Wortley, but I'm thinking of letting Wortley go. I' just in process of scanning them so may post some highlights as I go, but will set up a facebook page for them. I'd love to hear from anyone else who collects local postcards.
