Last night he scored his 35th Goal for England and his 15 behind the leading goal scorer and 16 would make him the out right England leading goal Scorer.

The only problem for me and the only way I don't think he will get the 16 needed will be that he does so much work that isn't going to help him scorer.

Gary lineker quite often will say he was quite a lazy striker. Wayne seemingly can't do that. He needs to be involved. I think Wayne's a footballer that would be a good midfielder in a way (i don't want him to play there for England)

Will he start and Miss friendly's has he gets to 30 year old and he starts to think about extending his career at Manchester United?

If Owen hadn't been so unlucky with his hamstrings, Rooney wouldn't get anywhere near the record, beacuse it would have been 20 or 30 more than Linekers.

I never mentioned Owen. I was going to mention Owen maybe as a reason he wouldn't break the record but I left him out.

The player he's trying to beat was more of an attacking midfielder. For me it'll be a shame if he beats Bobby Charlton unless he does it winning the World Cup. What are the chances of that?

Why will it be a shame if he breaks a record? He tries his hardest when playing for England.

I think he has an excellent chance

Of beating Bobby Charlton's record of 49 goals for England.

Because as Darred suggested, Charlton was a midfielder, and world cup winner.

Rooney is a striker, and tournament let-down.

But the amount of fixtures they play these days (against your San Marino's etc) you'd be surprised if he doesn't break it.

I like Rooney. He's a good player. But I'd rather our record goalscorer be Charlton.

Lineker would have broke it but for injuries, Graham Taylor and that missed penalty.

Are you sure it's not 50 goals? I doubt the OP would get such a figure wrong.... ;)

The Standard of football's gone up world wide Whitey and Bobby Charlton would have as said that a lot.

It's like your saying Wayne's a Goal hanger who never get's insured and plays against Rubbish teams which is so wrong.

Sorry i have. he's one closer then. Also about 60 behind for Manchester united.

    Go do it Wayne.

And i would like to see his assist figures too. Wayne Assists a lot to who ever he's playing with.

    Blummin ummer.

Do you think he'll break the United record then?

    At 20 a season, it's possible I suppose.

I think he will and when Bobby Charlton speaks on Sky he does too.

Bobby's probably Wayne's biggest admirer Whitey when you listen to him. He loves to talk about Wayne's work rate and drive and according to him, he's a very nice guy.
    Regularly says it.

I like Rooney. I named a cat after him in 2004. Seriously.

I like the sound of her!! :D

Bobby Charlton holds the record with 49, Gary Lineker was one behind when he was retired. We all thought Michael Owen would smash it out of site but it wasn't to be. Shearer came a little bit too late into the international frame to give it a challenge.

How old is Wayne now, 26? He's got 35 goals and perhaps 3-4 seasons left in him for England. We have a very average team at best and are not likely to survive the second round of major tournaments. Wayne perhaps has two qualifiers left in him and as Hemstein rightly pointed out he will miss friendlies as opportunities are given to others. He will almost definitely leave United by the end of next season and it would depend on where he goes as to whether he will still be selected. It really does depend too on what youngsters are coming through and the u21s look like they could beat the first team at the moment.

No, I can't see it. He would need 14 goals to equal Bobby Charlton, which will take him 40 games which he just won't get.
