Not being funny, never used it but

    What's so good about it?

What can you do that you couldn't do in XP?

Because to me, with minimum system requirements being 512MB of RAM with 1GB recommended just to run your OS, even though they're pretty commonplace specs nowadays, it does suggest the OS is severely bloated. I'd take some convincing that installing it is a good idea.

    Nice one

Can't make Saturday. Her Indoors says we're off up Wentworth instead this Saturday.
Should be in Sunday about 8:30 though if your mate will still be about.

Opaque windows (Aero Glass) / 3d effects looks great!

THe new shell and integration of desktop search and the new file structure is really nice. Just feels slick. Theres a desktop tool bar that you can install various gadgets on. It really is a much, much nicer user experience (once you get used to it). There also seems to be a lot more help on hand for the less experienced user.

Built in photo viewers with tagging. Again slick at importing photos and movies.

Windows Ready Boost - you can plug in a flash memory card and it will use it to cache key smaller OS and frequently used files to improve system perormance.

Better security - it asks you to confirm before it will do anything which I can see will become annoying..

Backup - at last a decent backup solution comes along with windows.

Does some sort of file versioning thing (havent worked it out yet but if you overwrite a file by accident you can get old version(s) back).

Its got all of the Media Center stuff as well if you want to use it. And you can use other devices as extensions Sideshow devices (whatever that is).

As far as performance goes my laptop (tablet) seems to perform better than it did with XP. (it does have 1.5 gig of memory and 870 mb of Windows Read Boost flash memory).

Speech recognition - not tried that yet though

    Probably other stuff.

Backup solution - not before fecking time M$
Other stuff sounds a bit gimmicky to me.
I'll hang off for a while. If only until the inevitable teething troubles are ironed out.

    Dunno.

Dont think it goes on public sale until Jan and there are a few different versions of it. Its was released to microsoft developers and microsofts larger business clients a couple of weeks ago. I've got a developer subscription that entitles me to pretty much anything that they release.

Drivers (or lack of) seems to be a problem in some cases. Some companies are holding back on releasing new drivers for their products until the public release at the end of jan.

Any news on PC manufacturers installing as standard?

Planning to replace my PC next year, will almost certainly be a Dell, still use Windows 98 at home (Dell PC still going strong since 2000)

Chris has been given a trial copy from Uni

and then a free copy in Jan when the new version comes out. His computer has crashed a few times as it doesn't like to support some of the other programmes he uses. I think he said it won't allow him to use nero and mentioned some others but can't remember which.

I had in on my laptop for a month....

And nothing worked properly. Sonic Stage- where all my music is stored, just collapsed and various other stuff just wasn't supported.

Looked good- but I think I'll wait till they sort themselves out

    Not being funny

but I'm pleased someone else has had problems. Chris is always updating things and installing new stuff for his pc and I just thought he was having problems because he may have tried to install too much. He's doing Performance and New Media so needs things like Sound forge and nero etc.

    He's reinstalled XP.
