Showing the poverty in large areas in Brazil. Prostitution and drugs rife, kids as young as 9 selling sex, under age kids with HIV. Showed a beach front in one city hosting World Cup, looked wonderful, like paradise, then they went one block back and it was as bad a slum as I've ever seen on TV anywhere in the world. Some of these areas are in view of the stadia. Kids are being trafficked to World Cup host cities too ready for the influx of tourists. I almost feel embarrassed to be so excited about the World Cup having seen what a state many parts of the country are.
Young Hitler is right it's hardly news, it's been like that over their since the beginning of time. Everyone one in world knows it too , so BBC have waisted more money telling us stuff we already knew.
The abject poverty in the favelas may not be a new problem but the darker side of this world cup is certainly news over there and should be here too. There have been riots and civil disorder in Brazil caused by the plight of these people - a nation that sees their poorest living in abject squalor while spening an absolute fortune on a football tournament tends to get its fingers burnt. If the spotlight of the world can, in any way, help to focus the Brazilian government (the 7th largest economy in the world and growing) on important social issues then that has to be a good thing.
We had the same with the world cup in Africa If the world cup was in England it would should Mayfair , then Lundwood Old news that we all know and nothing is going to change - the world cup isnt to blame for the state of Brazil
Their argument was that the £250million stadia will generate more money than they cost! The proof will be where that excess of revenue ends up been distributed and spent. Im sceptical to think that after the worlds eyes are no longer focussed on Brazil that it wont be channelled in the needy areas of society. Hope I'm wrong like.
Aye they showed the squalor in the shanty towns around Mexico City in 1970 and then again in 1986, nowt changes same owd lip service applied.
Well I do apologise to our resident Brazilian experts who already knew all about it. I had an idea that there was a lot of poverty there but had no idea just how bad it was - it certainly opened my eyes and I'd like to think I'm not a complete ignoramus. Seeing the actual places made it real to me rather than just reading or hearing about it. Yes there are some rough areas in the UK but I'm certain they are some way short of being as dire as what Panorama showed. It's also worth bearing in mind that these areas are in city centres where the stadia are. I'm not suggesting it's like that because of the World Cup, I suppose what it showed me is the enormous gulf there will be between the haves and have nots in Brazil in the next month.
You aren't alone. I was surprised at just quite the widespread abject poverty in such close proximity to the extreme wealth. It's disgusting. The World Cup should be about improving conditions in countries and boosting economies so the poverty is tackled. Problem with Brazil is that they already have a healthy economy it's just they have absolutely no intention of tackling poverty of the masses. The World Cup will boost the coffers of the wealthy and leave no lasting improvements to the most needy elements of society. There is no comparison that can be drawn between poor areas of the UK and these favelas. Child prostitution and death squads cleansing the streets of homeless children. Not sure football is worth that.
