But his free range arnt much better

The trouble is there are too many people wanting too much low cost food.
I run half a dozen hens in an acre of woodland and they are real free range. But there is simply not enough space to feed everyone like that. We can do a lot better, but dont be fooled into thinking that supermarket free range is it.

Chav Mum to the supermarket operator'Ohhh it's too expensive, can't afford that.... just chuck us a couple of packets of fags and that crate of Stella whist your at it pet... now what was I saying ooooo £2 extra for free range ... that would mean our 'Taliban Louise' and our 'Brooklyn Alkieda' wouldn't be able to have their 6lb of cheap sweets... lovely kids... eh.. no only 10 stone and 8 stone... what? eh oh... 8 and 6 next birthday...'

    Pray tell...

... thought they had to come from RSPCA certified farms. Or have I been lead astray by 'spin' ?

    ups

Industry /RSPCA standards free range is still fairly grim.
Hens have evolved in social groups of around 10.
If they are kept in much larger groups they spend all their time pecking eack other trying to establish a pecking order. Plus the ground they have access to rapidly becomes trashed and disease is a real problem.
In some wass intensive systems are better. There is a lower death rate often. But that was not the impression given last night

So what's the way forward ?

as it is not really economically viable to raise in batches of 10 ?

    Which reminds me

I was in that nice Mr Morrisons, when I saw a couple buying extra large free range eggs. I could not resist, so I asked them why they were buying them. to which the reply was "because its kinder to the hens". To which I pointed out "but you are buying extra large surely that will hurt" so they put them back and got medium.
    Honest!

    You are spot on

But the real problem is, there are just too many people wanting to eat too much food, and have too many toys.
But no one has the balls to stand up and address that fundemental issue.
There is just no way to produce bulk low cost food that is kind the the animals and the environment.
