I am certainly not a Davey fan, but I sometimes wonder if we are all too hard on him.

His brief is to keep us in the championship and subject to getting a point on Sunday he has now done this the last 3 seasons.

Relegation is like russian roulette and one day the chamber will have a bullet.

I think he has to go in the summer as he has not taken the club forward despite spending £millions but should we say "thanks for keeping us up and good luck with your next club".

His brief this season was to make a significant improvement in our league position, we are worse than we were this time last season and worse than we were when he took over.

Barnsley manager Simon Davey is flattered when he was linked with one of the best jobs in football, to be Sir Alex Ferguson number two at Manchester United, after it is likely that Carlos Queiroz is going to leave Old Trafford for the Portugal job.

Queiroz is leaving the top of the European Champions and is going to replace Luiz Felipe Scolari, while the “Sunday Times” says Simon, is among the four coaches who are going to take the manager assistance job in the theater of dream .

Simon told the official Barnsley FC website: “It is flattering to be linked with a club of such stature but I have a job here. We must be doing something right if I am being linked with jobs like this.

“We still have a long way to go at Oakwell and we are all looking forward to the new season”.

    The Sunday Times claims:

Brian McClair, highly regarded by Ferguson for his work as the club’s academy director, is among those likely to be considered as a replacement, although United may also look at up-and-coming Championship managers, such as Barnsley’s Simon Davey, Simon Grayson of Blackpool and Swansea’s Roberto Martinez.

    Not in my book- because:

Davey has had more time and backing in the transfer market than any manager I can remember. Yet he's consistently managed to almost get us relegated despite promises of progress each season.

His signings have been questionable- some good, some p*ss poor. And even when he picks his best side he often plays players out of position. His substitutions are tactically wrong half the time and invariably left till its too late for the changes to impact a game. And his motivational skills seem almost non existent.

He's not media friendly and not fan friendly. People don't warm to him because of his perceived arrogance.

So no, I don't think we are too hard on him. We could do much better.

The abuse he gets is way too personal at times, but considering our relatively small fan base in The Championship I think it's fair to say that he's had more backing than managers at clubs of a similar stature and we haven't achieved the mid table finish that was touted pre season.

My mate is a Wednesday fan and is a curious little fella, he's always asking me same

bearing in mind he only see's the results and picks up the odd embarrassing phone call on Radio Sheffield, he often queries why we want him out.

To be fair he definatley has a point regarding the fact that the biggest signing we've made for a while the £1.2m Iain Hume only played 3 months.

I've got to say with him all season we'd be safe now no doubts, not by mega points, but safe all the same.

However we didn't have him all season and the replacements have not fired the goals we needed, plus the away form has only recently been improved upon when the heat is on.

Somehow we have managed to turn Oakwell into a easy touch ground and far too many average if not poor sides have left with the points.

I tell him he has had 2.5 years at it now, not ages but not exactly 6 months neither. Apart from Bobby and Disco the ENTIRE squad is his and the fact is in terms of progression we have now just moved backwards, not by much, but backwards. Reason i say this is, it now goes to the last game where in previous two seasons we did it with a whole game to spare.

Players that were good enough one week are suddenly dropped for months, players with obvious talent and experience fall foul of Davey and don't play again, regularly tactically outclassed by opposition managers.

As a manager you live and die by results, look at the league table and ask yourself "Are we being too hard"

God knows what Cryne is thinking? he was quoted as saying the club needs to progress year on year

Well we haven't, so over to you Patrick

I'd say that 2.5 years in the world of football management is a long time and there have been no signs of progression in that time

I also think we would be in pretty much the same position if Hume had not been injured - but all teams get injuries and it's how you deal with them.

All the players are his - he gave Devaney and Hassell new contracts, making them his players

Forest have stayed up becuase they brought in half a new team. Including a 1.5m striker to play along side the 2.5m striker.

Yes, every team in the history of ever that has introduced a new manager has failed as a result.

    Good point SM

Ive reached the point of antipathy towards our manager, if we stay up, I wouldnt be too concerned either way. Better the devil you know sometimes, if we could see into the future fair enough, but the next man might just be worse.

The next man will have to be able to work with the current board structure at Oakwell.

Someone like Paul Ince, that sort of chap.

You're right of course and knowing how our board works, it's pretty much guaranteed that someone in the club shop or working the turnstyles on the weekend will be given the nod.

That's a fair point. Clubs are often rash in sacking managers without giving enough thought to the replacement and long term plan. I'd rather see Davey go than stay but only if there was an experienced and qualified replacement interested and available.

That said, the powers that be have been reluctant to splash out on an experienced manager in the past. I'd hate to see a recently retired player thrown in or someone already at the club! Investment in a proven manager pays dividends.

Funny you say that, i heard (by heard i mean rumour in the pub before saturdays game) that a current player would be the next manager when Davey goes.
