I've not been a member for very long on here, but so far I've found it to be a very pleasant board and much more welcoming than other certain competitors , and there are some very interesting characters on here! Anyway, one of my hobbies is genealogy (researching family history). I don't get paid for it, it's just something I do that I enjoy and I find it to be a bit more constructive than laikin' Fifa 24/7 and whatever else my young generation is up to these days. Although not gonna like, I'm partial to a bit of FIFA/Football Manager too. If anyone is interested in their distant family history/origins or has a black spot in their recent family they don't know much about, I'd be happy to help for nowt. Just something I like doing. I've recently managed to trace mine and my wife's families back over 1,000 years, and a few other Barnsley folk back several hundred years too after advertising the service on Facebook, including one whose family escaped Hungary after the War, giving us very little to go on. It's fascinating stuff if you're a history boff like me. Inbox me or something if you'd like to find something out
OK here's a challenge. I've traced one line of my family back to about 1600 - most of the info came from Sheffield archives 25 years ago. The family is the Blonks - a cutlery family that made scissors and after which Blonk Street in Sheffield is named. The the history of the Master Cutlers says thank Bryan Blonk of Cromwell, Notts was the father of William Blonk a scissorsmith in about 1623, but we can't get any further back. We've found other Blonks in Cromwell about the same time, but no evidence going further back.
Love to do my families but never got around to it, don't think I know how to start off. Any advice on how to do them swab test thingys to find out where your families genes start from, how much it costs and where to do it.
Got PMs from a few interested parties, so looking forward to seeing what we can dig up! Anyone else interested still welcome to get in touch.
