but don't know if I'm brave enough. I know no-one on here can tell me but the thread the other day got me thinking (even more than I already was). We can afford it but the houses we were looking at would be nowhere near on our radar any more. I also don't know what I'd do (I want to be a librarian but there's not many jobs, it doesn't pay well and you need to have experience to get on a masters course). On the other hand, I don't think I can do this anymore. There's too many thoughts whirling around my head to think straight!

What has this country come to - when teachers are bailing out like this !!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately the pendulum has swung too far to the left in education..........it needs readdressing......first thing thrown through the window would be 'How to be Politically Correct'.

    Bring back the FIVE 'Rs'

    Reading
    wRriting
    aRithmetic

    and.............Respect..........and..........Responsibility

How long have you been teaching now? Friend of mine has chosen to try supply after 23 years because of the workload etc - it's not getting easier is it? It's my 24th year and have never known it like this

'Only' 6 years. A good thing about teaching is if I leave and it all goes tit's up, or hopefully education becomes more sane, I could probably come back. Not that I want to even consider that right now!

Nah, I've seen how kids treat supply teachers! I also think the light bulb moments would be few and far between.

Forget the library idea JD...paid jobs will be in short supply, the way things are going only the Central libraries will have paid staff, the rest will be closed or volunteer run.

I hope you don't leave because our country needs good teachers.

However, if you do decide to leave, make sure that everybody, EVERYBODY, knows your reasons why. Somebody, somewhere, some day has to change something so people like you don't get so disillusioned. For the sake of our society and the future of our young people.

School, college and universities have libraries though and lots of other companies need information managers. To be fair though, I would happily work at one voluntarily rather than be paid to teach.

    Hi JD,
Hang in there, we need teachers who care (as looking at your previous posts, you obviously do). my daughter has been teaching in primary for 4 years and regularly does 60/70 hour weeks because she cares (and makes me worry about the stress she is under), but she cares and without the likes of you and her, boy are we in trouble. Chin up, come on girl

The problem with supply teaching now is that because of the use of HLTA for cover and the fact that many secondary schools employ full time "Cover teachers" there isn't the work around that there once was. I gave up full time teaching in 2001 and have seen the mount of work available gradually diminish to a level which is only now viable because I am also now in receipt of my pension. Without that there is no way that I could survive on Supply work alone.

Don't make the decision when it feels like it's all got too much. I'm sure, if you're anything like the teachers I know, you'll have periods when you feel stressed and periods when you feel you're in control. None of us make good decisions when we're feeling the pressure. Assess the situation when you're calm and relaxed, which will come round again, and you'll know, if you still want to leave, it's because you really don't enjoy it any more, rather than a reaction to a difficult few weeks.

My advice for what its worth is lifes too short to be in a career you dont like. I know its easy to say and you still need money but sounds like your a very articulate fella and obviously very bright (being a teacher) so i would say you would excell at a all manner of things. Im kinda speaking from experience, I left a job i hated to do something i love and took a big pay cut but would never turn back. Its a little more difficult for you as people describe teaching as a vocation as opposed to a job but no vocation is worth making yourself poorly for. It seems a massive decision but in the grand scheme of things (family etc), it isnt really. Good luck anyroad mate.

This is funny, I was just looking into this as I have had enough after hearing we are having our second faculty review in two terms. The monitoring culture is insane. It seems supply work has really taken a hit this year. I am trying to think what I can do. Luckily I have a scholarship to study PhD and that is the career route I'm trying for to escape, difficult as it will be, but even though I am only working two days in school it dominates life to the point I struggle to study for the PhD.

and I agree with this- it feels like life is too short and you wish your life away under the stress of this job, looking to the next term's end

Dont be influenced by the house you won't be able to have. Your health, happiness and sanity are far more important than anything material. If you're really that unhappy get the hell out. Life's too precious and way too short to waste it doing something that makes you feel so bad.
