...Charlie Brooker's weekly wipe...Doug Stanhope section has a classical piece in the background (sounds like a requiem Beethoven-ish) very slow movement with basses and cellos based on one note Quite famous.... driving me nuts trying to find out who composed it and what it is. Can anyone tell me?

7th Symphony, 2nd Movement - 'Allegretto'. Also used at end of 'Knowing', that apocalyptic, end o' t'world movie with Nic Cage. Look for the 1974 performance from the Vienna PO under Carlos Kleiber. Been spruced up with the 5th on a Deutsche Grammophon recording. Ace.

Can't join in the high brow discussion I'm afraid, but he has the best tagline I've ever heard.

I'm Doug Stanhope and that's why I drink.

My ambition in life is to come up with something so cool.

A good comedian too. Saw him at Leeds City Varieties a couple of years back.

I only know him from his appearances on the Charlie Brooker shows. Just been checking his website out and this is the funniest thing I've seen in a long time.

If you're the type of person that gets offended by things, please don't press play. This is not safe for work. It's not safe for home. It's not safe for anyone under the age of 40. Don't complain, you have been warned.

Hahaha. Yeah that was part of his set when I saw him. Took me a little while to fully 'get him', as I assumed his schtick was long rants about very American based issues. But he's actually a really bright guy and I end up agreeing with a lot of the stuff he says, even the purposely exaggerated stuff. Can do the slapstick knockabout stuff as well. Basically spent his entire career drunk and touring. Rock and roll comedy.

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.
Thank you. That's brilliant. I enjoy him on Charlie Brooker, but longer pieces obviously suit his style better. I'm now going to check for any tour dates.
