    Without pining for pits it is sad that there's not much to differentiate Barnsley from other places now.

    It is indeed, captures that time perfectly.

    Getting back to Dillinger's point, there seems a distasteful rush to obliterate any connection to the past in Barnsley at the moment. Let's get a halo up whilst the remainder of the town looks like a war zone.

    It's noy just Barnsley, it's anywhere where an industry created a community. The warehouses/call centres etc, whilst welcome for the jobs they brought certainly don't give the place an identifiable spirit, which is a shame.

    so in summary

    I've not read it properly or taken anything in but.. would I be right in saying that everyone's well happy that the pits were closed, they're much better off, but they don't like big conifers?
