Its an important and dangerous job. But...

they do an awful lot of playing snooker and sitting around. I did work experience at the station opposite Kingstone school, and certainly honed my potting if nothing else.

    Yes....damn them

We should have more fires and then they wouldn't have time for sitting around!

    Exactly

Everyone should aim to start one fire a week, to improve firemen's job satisfaction. Its the least we can do.

The "dangerous" bit is a myth.....

....perpetuated by them to cadge more money and get daft birds waving to them. They're way down the dangerous jobs list below even window cleaners.

They don't just have to fight fires you know.

I'm sure we could find them plenty of other useful things to do.

And I'm sure they do them

Given that they can't just clock off if their shift finishes whilst they are at a fire, or that they can't just stop for a brew - then I've no problem with the fact that they play snooker etc at the station.

I thought about a career in the Fire Service

But was put off by the hours, hard graft, and lack of holiday. Thought it might all be a terrible bore.
So glad I chose Teaching instead

    If there was a way

to play that bit of music that came on in Big Break when the game finished, I would do it now. Heres my rendition, as a celebration of that post:

    "doodleoodleoodleoodleoooooo"

Why indeed? Better still do away with them altogether...

...and train the coppers to deal with the occasional fire.
