When you are using flat view you get those lohos to the side of the threads.

<img src=http://www.barnsleyfc.org.uk/BBS/templates/original/images/common/thread-open-hot.gif> means the thread has no new replies but is a hot topic. ie it has had more than 20 posts in it.

and
