If you're on Windows 10 there's a bug which affects external keyboards (not an internal one as on a laptop). The keyboard can randomly switch off, making a USB disconnection sound, then turn back on again. If you're typing when this happens, a few keys will be missed. The solution is: - Right click on Start button -> Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Devices and Printers -> USB Keyboard (double click) -> Hardware tab -> USB Input Device -> Properties -> Change Settings -> Power Management tab -> Uncheck the 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' check box. This is probably nothing to do with your problem, but it's worth knowing anyway as using an external USB keyboard with Windows 10 will do your head in. And yes I know that some of you think that Windows is **** and I should be using an Apple product. But I don't want to.
It will be to do with the post format. You can select a simple post or one where you can do all sorts of styling. As your typing you might see 'auto save'. That's where the issue is. Does it on mine when on PC.
Thanks although I had already done that. I do use an External USB mouse and keyboard though. Since upgrading to Windows 10 my studio PC also throws a wobbly on first startup and I sometimes get no sound (I disabled the onboard card) a I use a Pro-Tools external sound DA/AD box (MBox2) with appropriate drivers. I hae to restart and it works at the second atempt. Played around with services / application startup order etc. to no avail. Funnily enough I do have MCSE MCP certification going back to 2000 (so not a lot of use as I then went into Telecoms/ Genesys and apart from occasional NT server builds didn't use it. I also retired 4 years ago and 4 years is a long time in IT. Gven your excellent description of the problem and possible solution I suspect you are IT trained ??
I'm actually an electronic design engineer, currently retired like you, but taught myself software and IT alongside my hardware work as it's impossible to be a design engineer without being IT competent. I still do software and web design on a hobby basis. I belong to the group of people who learn IT by a 2 step process - 1) Open a new software package, click every control on it and see what happens 2) Type a question into Google and read what it says on the screen. Once you have the basics, that's all the training you need. Maybe you can help with a Windows 10 problem? I designed an electronic scoreboard for our cricket club (and no it doesn't have missing digits) which is controlled from a Windows 10 PC using a USB to serial adapter. However, the adapter is old and is no longer supported, so it doesn't work with the latest driver. The solution is easy - just install an old version of the driver, but it keeps getting updated by Windows 10. We can't disconnect from the internet because the laptop puts live scores on the club website. I'm trying to find a way to prevent Windows downloading and installing the latest driver, but I'm stumped (pun intended). We could just buy a new adapter, but I'm intrigued about finding a solution to the problem first. Apologies to any non-IT people reading this COYR!
I have had problems with Windows 10 updater and more specifically from time to time a component causing the processor on my laptop to run at >50% slowing apps down and also getting rather hot. I did change the startup type (‘Windows Update’ service) in services from the default ‘Automatic’ to ‘Manual . which just means I have to remember to turn it on now and again to get any updates. However, I have never been in favour of MS doing stuff automatically as, as you say, it often ‘fixes’ stuff like old drivers that don’t need fixing. In some rare cases I have even known it to overwrite bespoke drivers that came with hardware with its own generic windows driver meaning some functionality was lost. Ho-hum. Being relatively new to Windows10 I have never investigated the options for stopping updates of specific drivers / services/adapters but there are one or two interesting pages when Googling that provide options or part solutions (I admit to not having tried any as I work on a ‘needs-must’ basis . Anyway I just googled ‘how to prevent windows 10 updating specific adapters’ (sorry if you have already done that) A couple of URLs are listed here: http://www.winbeta.org/news/windows-10-how-blocking-automatic-reinstall-driver-or-update-windows-10 http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/take-back-control-driver-updates-windows-10/ If all else fails they suggest a roll back of the specific driver you didn’t want updating but that sounds a bit tedious especially if you haven’t turned off the automatic updating. Sorry I cannot be more help and you have probably tried all of that anyway. At least Win 10 seems to have fixed most of the memory leaks that I used to have with Win7 and, before that, Win XP (although I did quite like both of those OS)
Thanks, but as you hinted I tried all that and unfortunately none of it worked. We've known about the problem for a couple of years but in the past we fixed it in Windows 7 and 8 by just disabling automatic updates, which isn't an option in Windows 10. We'll just buy a different adapter which works! By the way, there's a bodge to prevent automatic updates but still have an internet connection - set your internet connection to "Metered" (Settings -> Network & Internet -> Advanced Options -> Set as metered connection -> On. As you say you need to remember to periodically check for updates if you do this. Thanks for your help, if you like cricket (and live locally!) come and have a free pint at the cricket club and I'll show you the system www.stainboroughcc.co.uk.
If you find a solution to your Norman Collier typing problem, please let me know the answer. I have it MS Word on Windows 7 - but only in MS Word. Notepad, browsers, etc all fine.
