Over 6,000 people in Erdington STILL, after all that's happened over the last few months, voted Conservative.

We have a huge problem in this country when anyone never mind 6,000 could possibly find a reason to vote Tory.

Gotta love this comment from the Tory loser

the fact the majority is so small here today is really a damning indictment where the Labour party is nationally," he added.
    (Difference of around 3k voters).

Can't help thinking that the size of the Tory vote has something to do with the race and gender of the Labour candidate.....

The turnout is a damning inditement of where they both are.

It’ll never happen but the voting system needs a complete overhaul. If there was an election today I might not vote as it would be a race between the Facists and the Red Tories and voting anyone else is a complete waste of time.

How many seats did labour win in Scotland at the last general election? That tells its own story.

What were the numbers in the end? Didn’t Labour get 17,000 last time?

Reckon the majority would have been much larger if the vote had been taken a fortnight ago.

You may be right @Brush. But I suspect you would be very wrong to think it's a case of simply black vs white (if that is your thinking).

I wasn't suggesting that it's simply a race issue, I know Erdington (the Jaguar plant I worked at for 15 years is in Erdington) and the place is a diverse cultural mix. I know that there is an undercurrent of BNP leaning in the area and we all know there are people who still prefer men in suits in power to women of any description.

I would never not vote. That’s the only 100% guaranteed way to ensure you have no impact on the outcome. You might consider it 99.9% likely anyway but some freak incident might mean lots of people stay at home, or lots of people who normally stay at home might decide to show up and vote the same way as you, or a lot of people might have changed their mind from their usual vote, you just don’t know. You know your preferred candidate isn’t getting your vote if you don’t cast it though.

I like to think people have gotten used to women in politics by now but take your point that there will always be a minority of meatheads that will discriminate regardless. As for the race issue, when you scratch below the surface there is inherent racism between ethnic minorities which never really gets spoken about. You have the caste system, and people from ethnic minorities (non-white) that believe the darker your skin the lower you are. Discrimination also exists between the religions. So this could also account for some of the votes. As I say, not something that really gets spoken about but something that definitely exists.

Voter apathy. I think there’ll be several million less voters at the next election. Lots of people on the left won’t vote Labour & lots of Tory voters from the last election who are feeling let down won’t go back to Labour or Lib Dem’s

You have to take into account that there are more racists in this country than not.
Congratulations Mrs, Hamilton on becoming the City's 1st black MP.

'Apathy' suggests people don't care. I'd suggest it's more to do with voter fed uppery, or people that are sick of the system. But it's generally not apathy.
