Just back from the game, and a great relief to finally see some football played in the last 30 mins! The game was dire up to that point, and our players looked like they'd never met each other before. 5-3-2 seemed to work OK as a system, I can see why he wanted to try that way and credit to SD for doing so. Werling looked like a threat and put some excellent crosses in, whilst having the pace and power to cover the length of the field. Similarly Kozluk, who for me went from worst player on the field on Saturday to the best tonight. Super cross for the first goal (Ferenczi's first touch). After that we really settled down and played some good stuff through the midfield, weren't too rushed and consequently got some service to the front two. Odejayi was a threat and I think if we can get a better end product out of him he'll be a cracking player. The presence of Ferenczi seemed to help him out too (he seemed to be casting more than a few quizzical looks at Mostto before he went off!) and I wonder if we might be best served starting with those two on Sat. They certainly have the potential to bully a few defences, which would make a nice change to seeing it the other way round. On the negative side, Reid's distribution was shocking and if we are to play this system the balls from the back need to be much better (Nyatanga suffered a little too). Johnson seemed unable to find a red shirt in the first half and really needs to give the mouth a rest and concentrate on his own game. Togwell looked far more assured when he came on, and i think he earned a start. I also think perhaps the system could potentially allow McCann the mobility around him to really influence a game, and would be worth a try in the future, especially given Ricketts' tendency to run down blind alleys. On the whole, I'm just so glad to have something positive to take out of the game, something to return some optimism after saturday that I'll forget the 1st half and focus on the positives. Finally, congratulations to Tommy Wrong on his first goal at Oakwell!!
Pretty much agree apart from Werling, not impressed . How on earth did Ricketts get Man of the match???????
I knew that was coming!! I can even remember the game, just not that he'd scored. Still, a long time to wait for his 2nd...
I've no idea I thought he was pretty poor to be honest. Still, he looks like he's got a bit about him in time, it's up to Davey to get it out of him
Do you think 5 across the back suits the overseas players better who are prob used to playing a sweeper style system
Impossible to say Dennis looked more comfortable as less responsibility to mark (I'm not sure about this boy, but seen as everyone else has been well impressed will keep it to myself for now!), and ceratinly Werling looked more comfortable to me. One game against Darlo isn't enough to judge anything, but I'd give it another go. They looked more comfortable with the system as the game went on for sure
Good Dennis looked lost on saturday did not know when to get forward or stay back , probably dunt know what overlap means , but mention Libero to him and his face will light up , cover across back , read the play , carry the out etc, what brazilians were born for.
To say we played 5 across the back i dont think we seemed any better defensively, we were made to look like the lower league side for the first half.
We didn't have 5b across the back for christs sake 3 5 2 is what we played. That is not 5 across the back. Now get your text books out and look again (doh) (doh)
RE: We didn't have 5b across the back for christs sake it was like 2 at the back with Reid there, We desperately need to get another Centre Half in instead of Reid. The bloke tries but is not good enough.
