How far do you think it is possible for them to go in the pyramid?? Apparently Fleetwood were at their level about ten years ago and I would imagine they had smaller crowds as Athersley pulled over 500 for their last home game. It would be difficult without an injection of cash but what could they hope to achieve?
No idea. But to be pulling over 500 in at that level is commendable. It's where my family are from, so should they ever get to our level, perhaps I ought to be supporting them?
If they got to a decent level I could imagine some Barnsley fans watching them if there were no fixture clashes. I think I would every now and then.
The 500 was a one off, but they're doing amazing job. If they go up this season (which looks likely), they'll be in the same league as Scarborough next season. And they pay none of their players which makes it extra special...
Anythings possible! Taking it a game at a time at the minute but looking good for promotion. Some quality players down there at min and if we can keep them and get into baris prem then that's the highest any team in Barnsley have played (bfc exempt) The next step of the pyramid will be the Eco stick I believe where frickley and Fc united play so that has o be the aim. Money talks but not one of the rec players get paid and all play for porky for free! They are at home sat and f anyone has a spare weekend get down you might be surprised to see a few ex Barnsley players playing! The highest apart from fri for the crowd was 300 ish before ad average around the 150 mark on most matchdays and most away games we outnumber the home fans!
If I still lived in Carlton, I'd be there. I've been to a few over the years. But it's a ball-ache coming over for Tarn games let alone for the Rec.
Wombwell Athletic won Yorkshire League in 1945/46 which covered teams from all 3 ridings of Yorkshire plus a few more, dont know league structure at that time but must`ve been pretty high up the pyramid. Can remember Wombwell SA int Northern Counties East(80`s) not sure if they went any higher than that. Whats Worsboro Bridge`s highest up the pyramid? Anyone any idea.
Barnsley should arrange pre-season friendlies at Athersley Rec and Worsbrough Bridge - lots of professional clubs have these friendlies at local non league teams as it can be a right money maker for the non league club. A couple of thousand Barnsley fans would probably turn up to Athersley / Worsbrough - don't know what the capacity at each ground is? Perhaps that's why we've never done it before? Every time we've played at places like Stocksbridge in pre-season, it's always been heaving with Barnsley fans
My mate plays for Emley FC who are in the same league as Athersley Rec and they have played Huddersfield Town at Emleys ground for the past couple of years (Usually mid to late July). Typically Huddersfield start with half 1st teamers and half trialists & second half play mostly development squad. Brings in a good crowd every year and a nice earner for Emley. Its nice to see professional clubs not ignoring grass roots football, and should be done more across the country, great experience for amateur players and nice for crowd to see trialists & new signings us close before start of season.
I think they have tried before at Rec to sort one with Barnsley but don't think they had any joy. It holds a few thousand at the San sheerien so ticket only and it's sorted! About time Barnsley supported local teams
Saw Worsbrough Bridge play Blythe Spartans in an FA Cup Qualifying game (Think it was one or two games from first round proper) in front of about 2,500 at Park Road. Must be highest Tarn attendance for a none-BFC game.
Wombwell Main played Doncaster Rovers in a formal cup competition........lost 1-0. This was ~10 years ago......maybe 15 years. I watch a bit of local football and in my opinion, we have some very good teams - Wombwell Main, Athersley Rec, Houghton Main, Aquaforce, Worsborough.
That was in the Sheff & Hallamshire Senior Cup and Doni were in it because they had gone down into Conference. Main put up a good show that neet.
