<div class="ds-headline" id="ds-headline">Reds say no to loan deal</div><div class="ds-firstpara" id="ds-firstpara"></div><div class="ds-firstpara">ROBERT Atkinson and Nathan Jarman are wanted on loan by Scarborough but Barnsley boss Andy Ritchie will not release either before the big kick-off. </div><div class="va-bodytext">Centre-back Atkinson was on loan at the Conference club last season and Scarborough manager Neil Redfearn made a bid to sign striker Jarman temporarily last season. Ritchie is stonewalling these latest requests because either player or both could be involved in the first team next season. </div><div class="va-bodytext">Barnsley are prepared to let players out on loan to Scarborough in the wake of Michael Coulson's move to Oakwell. The club have sacked coach Mick Tarmey. Tarmey was in his second spell at the club, having returned on a part-time basis when the club was in administration. He acted as physio and became academy manager in November 2004 after Stuart Watkiss quit to manager Kidderminster. He also coached Barnsley reserves last year. Simon Davey starts at Barnsley Academy manager on Monday. Ritchie's assistant Rick Holden is expected to manage the reserves next term with some help from Davey. </div><div class="va-bodytext">Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday have axed their coach and former defender Mark Smith., who also had a spell at Oakwell. It is rumoured that his shock departure is down to cost-cutting but the Owls have yet to make an official announcement. Smith, aged 46, was an assistant manager of the academy and coached the 0nder-18s, but has also been taking the reserves for Pontin's League games and conducted pre-match warm-ups for the first-team until the recent appointment of fitness coach Adam Owen. </div><div class="va-bodytext">He had appeared to be an integral part of the Owls' backroom set-up. If he has gone as part of financial pruning then it suggests that the club will not bring in someone to replace him. Sean McAuley is the academy manager. It ends a long association for Smith with Hillsborough. </div><div class="va-bodytext">He is a Sheffielder and a Wednesday fan who emerged through the club's youth policy to become a key centre-half of the late 70s and early 80s and win England Under-21 honours. He rejoined the Owls from Barnsley three years ago as a coach after leading the Oakwell youngsters to the FA Youth Cup semi-finals and second place in their league. Smith's Oakwell connnection also resulted in the Owls signing former Reds striker Drew Talbot. During Smith's time at Hillsborough, the academy side have had a second-place finish in the league, the reserves finished runners-up to Manchester United in the Pontin's League Cup, and last season won the Central Division title. knock knock I did not say we were £27m in debt did I? We ARE in debt thought, to the tune of at least £1.5m (BFC Dave, could you explain teh payment thing?) And, we ARE scratting about for money. The issue above is related to this, because if myunderstaning is correct certian monies are due for full repayment by October this year.
I think Atkinson will get a chnace in the first team this season (and not just because there's not competition!). Scarborough fans loved him last season so this could be his year, you never know.
Well thats certainly put my mind at rest now i know those two could be playing in the first team next season, just what we needed, experience!
