There have been a lot of people (myself included) who criticised the atmosphere at Oakwell recently (and rightly so, at times it was shocking). Last night it was fantastic. The 'We're The Red and White Army' was especially cracking. Was like the atmospheres we used to get that. Hope it keeps up. You Reds.
Yeah it was great last night. Obviously winning helps but I don't think there is more to it than that. The tempo of play is probably the key factor, we're far more direct under Flicker (at times too direct last night if I'm being overly fussy) and it stands to reason that if we're causing them problems in the opposition half there will be more to cheer about. The work ethic is also phenomenal. Harewood chasing around like a lunatic and Dagnall running marathons also inspires the crowd. It's been like a library at Oakwell for too long...good to hear a bit of noise again. That said, even at our worst we make more noise than Hull. It was like a morgue at the KC the other day.
As I said, I'm being overly and unecessarily fussy. We've been more direct under Flicker in the sense that we've been hitting the forwards earlier with passes from the back. Undoubtedly a good thing. We laboured painfully under Hill knocking it around the back four and any momentum soon dissipated. Last night we were hitting early balls pretty much every time. Makes sense, we had Harewood, O'Grady and Dagnall in forward positions and they are all excellent with their back to goal. It was clearly a tactical move from Flitcroft as we didn't have the numbers we usually have in midfield so bypassing it made sense. I just think if I'm being overly critical we could have played through Perkins and Delap more often. But don't get me wrong, it's certainly not long ball. Pretty much all the passes forward were accurate and aimed at the chest of the forwards. Not aimless punts by any stretch.
Couldn't tell what the words were at first, turned and asked my Dad if it was "We love Linda McCartney"?
