I've been watching Barnsley a long time and that last night was the worst atmosphere I've ever witnessed. OK we can use the excuse that it was a dire performance but we scored after 5 minutes and were on top until they scored yet you could here a pin drop and were outsung by 89 away fans. Then from the moment they equalised, every single mistake was jumped upon and players given dogs abuse. Most of them are young lads and will make mistakes but they weren't given an inch last night. It can't be easy knowing that someone's going to jump down your throat if you don't produce a world class pass. Maybe a bit of encouragement might actually make them perform better. People seem to be looking for a mistake so they can have a dig. Personally, I thought Hourihaine was played out of position again but did his best and put more effort in than recent games. He had a couple of long range efforts that were close and set up the goal yet he was cheered off sarcastically when he was substituted - why? Hemmings has his limitations but he's come from a lower level and is doing his best. It's not his fault he isn't up to the mark but booing him at every opportunity isn't going to help him either. Jennings is another scapegoat, he was brought on late and you could sense that people were waiting for him to **** up so they could slag him off. He didn't do much wrong in the few minutes he played but I could hear the taunts from all over the Ponty. The only player that the fans have any time for is Sam Winnall and he hasn't played a game since before Christmas. The rest are easy prey for the boo boys and in all my years, I've never heard it as bad at Oakwell. Even the young lads at the top corner of the Ponty gave up the ghost last night and the place was like a morgue. I've heard more atmosphere at a Worsbrough Bridge match. I know its a chicken and egg scenario where if the players give us something to shout about we'll respond but last night they gave us something to shout about in the first 15 minutes and we didn't respond. I'm not excusing the performance which was one of the worst I've seen but it's our town, our club through thick and thin and even though it's a bit thin at the moment we should get behind them COYR
good post fella.... I was there last night for one of my limited edition appearances at the 'Well... I was a bit upset to find a very small queue forming for my autograph..... but moving on. To put it in a nutshell from me I would say that the youngsters on the pitch ran through the wall for our cause..... however I did think that our so called 'seniors' did very little on the lines of 'putting a shift in'..... this is a barrier that needs crossing, the link from old to young needs sorting.
Re: good post fella.... Our 2 better players were seniors. Rammage and Cranie. Both worked hard for the cause.
You might just have hit the nail on the head there mate. Wilson seems to be fretting about the opposition too much and over-thinking the game. They've obviously been given jobs to do on the opposition but seem to be totally clueless what to do when we have the ball. I've no idea who was supposed to be wide right last night but felt sorry for young Smith who should have been overlapping but ended up sprinting the full length of the field with three men on his tail and no support. Cloughie reckoned football was a simple game but it ain't if you're Barnsley fan.
Not been funny but oakwell is a terrible ground for atmosphere. If it wasn't for the young lads in top corner it would have been like last night all season But how do you get behind a team performing like they have Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I get your point. Cheering Hourihane off was crass and I agree that the crowd's reaction does not help the young players. However, what's the excuse for our hapless away performances? Can't blame the fans there. Can't see there being more than 150 make the trip to Crawley so we should expect a confident and assured display.....
I completely agree re: Hourihane. However badly a player plays the fans (not all) should never cheer him off.
I Just chatted with my 9 year old son re last night, we started at the Yeovil home win so its our first defeat experience. I asked him what he thought he said 'the fans were getting on at the players n that' interesting that even at his age these were his first thoughts post match. I also thought the atmosphere was dead, I think expectations were that we were going to drive on towards playoffs especially after the first goal and oncoming fixtures so the disappointment was hugely evident. From a motivational point of view I think this kind of pressure is conducive to being relayed onto the pitch, I know its frustrating but any negative that could affect a player on pitch we should be avoiding, at the end of the day everyone wants the same outcome, players, fans, manager etc nobody is trying to lose...... we criticise players mistakes when even the best players in the world make em including penalty misses. The atomsphere has been same for some while but the previous seasons have been a relegation struggle in the championship. This season against crawley first game 10k reds turned out with alot of expectation got behind the players and team untill they scored and then reality kicked in and we were getting beat by crawley town. I didnt go last night I have given my self a break scince donny but the team and wilson have had support this season now wilsons tactics and teams performances are wearing thin. I dont agree with cheering people off one of our best players on his day. But can understand frustrations thats why im having a break for a while.
