There's been a lot of comment about the lack of atmosphere and attendance at Oakwell of late, well on sunday I was at The Vicente Calderon for the La Liga match between Atletico Madrid and Granada. The attendance for the match was 52,000, however, the noise made by the crowd was almost non-existent. Admittedly we were at the front of the top tier but except for immediately after the 2 goals the quiet was deafening. Maybe it was much better down at pitch level or that the part of the ground we were in is all families etc (there were loads of young kids). Or possibly "atmosphere" is only tenuously related to attendance and it's the attitude of the supporters which really matters. I dunno.
When five hundred away fans (ours included when away) can make stacks more noise than 10k home fans at Oakwell...its proves its nowt to do wi numbers.. I can remember when the (New)Ponty-ORA first opened there was plenty of noise coming out of it....on gates of 7k Nar its not numbers mate....for some reason for the last few years now there an air of doom-and-gloom at Oakwell....what is needed is a very small thing...but also in a way a very large thing...which is a change of perspective... a change of mind...because weather we know it or not..we all have the power to be positive or miserable and the amazing thing is, it takes just a moment..a second to do it.....and one more thing..drop ANY expectation, cos its just that what tries to challenge reality....no expectation and EVERTHING you get is a bonus...
all seaters mainly kill the atmosphere mate they break up the singers. It would be a good idea to have a non season ticket area in the home end I reckon plenty would go there and sing up..well those that wanted to.At away games I have found they (stewards) do not really bother with what seat number etc it says on your ticket, this means the lads/lasses who sing get all together and belt it out. Shame they could not put a roof over the corner of the Ponty/west stand under the floodlight and just have it a standing area..you could almost guarantee you would get a good bunch gathering there singing their hearts out. That would get a few other pockests singing too in the seated areas.Suddenly atmosphere to a degree, and who knows performances may lift too.
I agree. I think there is a sense of over-achievement at Barnsley, and even though i know that is true i believe its the totally wrong attitude to have. Somehow a buzz needs to be created around the town about BFC, maybe not the end of this season, but before the start of next. Just to get some optimism about instead of the overwhelming pessimism that exists now, and i believe that will in turn create a better atmosphere. We are BFC and we deserve to be competing in the top half of this league, and everyone should push for that
Re: all seaters mainly kill the atmosphere mate Some very good points there DT....when the ORA first opened you could sit where you like...... It would be a great step forward toward a better atmosphere...cos folk would enjoy there time at the match more...also with first timers and part timers wanting too return next week.... win lose or draw ......the result should not have to be the be all and end all.....but I would add that results at home would probably improve with a better atmosphere cos the players wouldn't be able to wait to play in front of the fans....win-win
Son's 18th Birthday treat He's a big La Liga fan - particularly Atletico - as well as a Reds fan naturally. So stop being an a-hole.
What, no mention of the crowd being being geed up by the players.. Attitude of the the suppoprters does matter of course, but the players/manager also have a responsibility to at least try to entertain and win the game. Then at least the moaning can only relate to the result if isn't favourable.
Wat ever happened to band in ponty end , I know the dee dars love there drums at hillsborough but at least it's better than sat in silence or a 14 year old singing red army for 10 minutes.
IMHO there isn't going to be any atmosphere until we start getting in a few efforts on goal because there has been very little on the pitch to generate any excitement for a long time now
I went to the Olympic Stadium to watch Espanyol v Real Madrid. The only time the home fans made a noise was when they scored and they booed Beckham when he came on. The crappest thing was when they played crowd noised over the PA when they were about to take a corner.
Ee were. On about this the other day at work, must be a cultural thing as a few have said there issue no atmosphere at Spanish games they have been to.
Good point mate But it would be great if there was a mighty roar from the Ponty as the ref blew his whistle to start the match like there used to be back in the day. Maybe that would gee the players up and get them up for it? Its a 2-way thing isn't it?
