Previously I had thought that Barnsley FC's attendance record was set against Stoke City, the following is taken from footballgroundguide.co.uk Record Attendance: 40,255 v Stoke City, FA Cup 5th Round, February 15th, 1936. However, recently I visited http://freespace.virgin.net/d.penty/honours/honours.htm which lists barnsleys record attendance at: Record Home Attendance 40,626 versus Nottingham Forest 1956 Anybody know which it is?
played forest in the fa cup that year att:38598
Home league att - 15666
from official history book.

I always thought it was against Leicester City in a Cup replay, mid-week afternoon kick-off, sometime in the late Fifties, early Sixties, 42000 plus. I remember having the afternoon off work to go and enjoyed watching Pat Howard frighten the Sh*t out of Allen Clarke.
RE: Good Book Yes mate, it is slightly dated now though. only covers upto and including the prem season, but well worth having .(y)

RE: Good Book I'll keep my eyes on ebay for a copy. I was only 5 or 6 when we were in prem so i probably wouldn't have found it good then
Me neither. But more importantly - is this your favourite TV programme? http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/cinema/features/fear-of-fanny.shtml
Pat Howard will have been about 10 yrs old then! Without looking up the records, he went to Newcastle in 1971 and I am guessing he was 20 or early 20s at that point (you know the story - decent young player, sell him on for a pittance). So, when we played Leicester Pat Howard will have been in the Under 11s about that time. Was Clarkey playing for Leicester then - not sure?
RE: Pat Howard will have been about 10 yrs old then! You're right Alan Clarke (b.31/7/46) was 14 when we played Leicester in that Cup replay in 1961 where Leicester went on to lose to the Spurs double winning side in the Final. Pat Howard (b. 7/10/47) was a year younger than Clarkey. We played Leicester in another replay about 1968-ish which both Howard and Clarke could have played in. That was a night game and drew nowhere near 40,000. Memory playing tricks on the lad.
40626 tickets were sold but only 38598 turned up. I sat up on the edge of the old Queen's Ground you could just see the penalty area at the Kop end in those days.
Coming up for the Leeds match - can you get me a ticket please Ron? By which time, of course, Leeds will have a world cup winning manager in - that very week in fact - and those donkeys in white shirts will suddenly find the will to live again and thrash us 4-0!
