Historically we have never had massive attendances. My first memory of Oakwell is against Grimsby on the old div 4 1979 where we got 29,000. I do not know what the average was that season. Going from memory up until 1984 the minors strike ala Alan Clarke and Norman Hunter era we used to average about 13 to 15K. 1984 to 1993 we used to average between 6.5 to 8.5K. 1994 All standing areas of the ground were closed off we averaged less than 6K, 1995 to 1997 8K our best league seasons. 1997/8 Premiership season 18,000 sell outs. This bugs me 1998 to 2000 we averaged between 14 to 16K this is what we should be averaging now, especially with the Piggy’s down at Swillsborough and Leeds not doing too well and cant be attracting that many fans from the Barnsley area. One thing that has never been done properly at Barnsley in marketing the club into the community, the perfect time to rectify this is now we have got the publicity.

I recall you had 23,000 at Bramall Lane for a meaningless league game 20 years ago
