There is a series of events and workshops for adults and kids about the book and film taking place at Hoyland Library over the next couple of weeks. I can't find any details on-line but I have a brochure and will try to post the main details later or you can call them. It's all free but you need to book. 01226 355832

That is amazing. I have just finished watching KES 30 minutes ago. It was Marlon who put me on to it as I had never heard of the film before. Some of the dialect was a bit alien but it did not detract from the film. I did enjoy it.
I'm 56 and some of the scenes ie in the house and at school reminded me of my upbringing. TBH not a lot different in Barnsley from Dundee. Looks like we endured the same deprivation. The housing in which I was brought up in was actually worse than what was depicted in the film. We only had 2 rooms, front and back no bath or toilet that was in the close shared with the next door neighbours. No hot water. Had to boil a kettle for that. Mum and Dad slept on a bed settee in the front room which had a gas cooker in the corner and a bunker for the coal and 1 cold water tap. And me and my brother shared a double bed in the back room. We suffered those conditions till 1964 when we were moved to a multi with an indoor bathroom. Heaven. LOL

And the school scene was just how I remembered some of the bullying teachers. But do you know what, it never done us any harm. I think the kids today could do with a bit of corporal punishment.

Anyway good film, pity I lost so much in translation. I'll need to get a Yorkshire dictionary. LOL

The Casper house is actually a decent little semi, would have been newly built in the late 60's. The interior scenes look a bit grim to stay faithful to the text. Just over Sheffield Road a little way is Bell Wood and Tankersley Old Hall where Billy gets the bird. Another bit of the Hall has collapsed recently, there is very little left of it, see it while you can. The biggest house in the area during the 17th century, Civil War stronghold too.

I'm going to the Geoffrey Houese and David Bradley talks at the Library, don't forget to ring up and book. :)

Glad you enjoyed it Ian tbh I thought you might it is a very spellbinding film whichever part of the country you live in.
The housing was typical of the council estates at the time but the type of housing you describe was very much the same especially in the mining areas of the town.
As far as the Yorkshire dictionary goes I think you'll need a Barnsley one tbh as there's a lot of phrases used that's unique to the town that is not understood a few miles down the road in either south or west york's

I can understand your comments about Barnsley speak because we in Dundee also have a unique accent and dialect. Don't know why it is but people in Scotland will always be able to pick out our accent. It is very broad and if you ever have the pleasure of visiting Dundee I'm sure you will have a bit of difficulty in understanding it.
At least we are a friendly bunch just like your own.

Stahlrost I actually stay in Broughty Ferry but you would never catch me drinking in the Fort. Its a Dundee FC supporting pub. No self respecting Arab would be seen dead in there.
How did you find Dundee hospitality? Did you enjoy yourself? BTW Broughty Ferry is the posh end of the town. :)

Been up there 6 times on an end of season cricket tour, played cricket at Rossie Priory, superb ground. Been great there, but sadly the powers that be have decreed that we must go to Skegness this year.

As for my Dundee slang, I may have got it slightly wrong. Someone was asking me if I wanted a bite of their pie, and it's an onion one as well.

Yeah Thats about right mate. I mentioned Bridie which is a sort of pasty and they come with or without onions.

Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself.
TBH I see a lot of Dundee in Barnsley when I visit. Its a really nice friendly town. No airs or graces about it. What you see is what you get. Right down to earth, just how I like it.
Really must try and get down soon.
