Any instructions or free software recommended?

    Cheers

Download Convertxtodvd, this wil convert your file and also write it to dvd.
You can download the program form most download sites such as http://www.mininova.org/ or http://torrent-finder.com/
    Heres how to use it:
    1: Open ConvertxtoDVD
2: If a box comes up to UPDATE never click yes
    3: Click the Green Plus
4: Select where your downloaded file is
5: Select the film you want to convert
6: Put in a blank DVD into your dvd writer
    7: Click the Convert icon.
Thats it, it can take upto 2 hours depending on the size of the film.
Hope this helps, it has worked for me for the last couple of years

It's a bit slow and boring

I occasionally burn AVI files to DVD, but it's significantly less hassle having a DivX compatable DVD player and they are really cheap. I bought a DVD player that plays AVI files - DivX compatable. It cost £50 from Sainsbury's. I tend to watch about 5 avi files a week so it was well worth the investment (Lost, Prison Break, Heroes and a couple of films) - 60 minutes of copying files to the hard drive versus 10 hours of converting files to DVD format so I can watch them on TV rather than on the computer.

Copying a film from my PC to my external hard drive takes 15 minutes (which is slow because I use USB1)
I can plug my hard drive straight into the DVD players USB port and then watch the film on TV off the hard drive.
It saves burning loads of DVDs, and if I want to back up the films to watch again, I can get 5 films on one DVD and still watch them off the disk - saves storage space.
If you burn an AVI film into a DVD format it pretty much fills the disk, so it's 1 film per DVD

I do burn AVI files into DVD format but it takes about 3 hours to convert them, so I only do it to things that I am going to watch repeatedly (or more to the point the kids will watch repeatedly) - Thomas The Tank Engine, Peppa Pig, etc.
The kids have a DVD player for in the car and that's not DVD compatable so burning things for them to watch in the car can get a bit dull.
I've also got a printer that can print images onto DVDs because it so time consuming when burn anything I to DVD I use printable DVDs and go the effort of putting a picture and title on the DVD - it makes for a semi-proffesional looking home DVD.

The software I use to burn AVI files to DVD is Nero 7, which came bundled with my DVD player, but you can also get from many of the torrent sites you will be downloading AVI films from - obviously it's can illegal copy ... but then so is the film. I think the specific application is called Nero Vision Express (which is part of the Nero 7 bundle), and it's very easy to use.

Thanks for your advice, what dvd player do you have? Didnt realise hard drives could be plugged straight into dvd players, this would probably be more worth while.

Will a divx player play the avi files if they are just copied straight on to a dvd?

just write them to a disc using nero, as a data dvd. you should be able to get about 4-6 films on a dvd. if the movie is less than 700mb you can also put them on a cd

    That's good news

It'll take no time to burn stuff straight to DVD in the original AVI format.

Converting to DVD format is dull
