Problem with this one is there are two very seperate viewpoints
At a simplistic level one group belive that badgers are passing TB to cows and culling the badgers will reduce this
the other viewpoint is that Badgers are being scapegoated and killing them wont make any difference

I have read both viewpoints and its hard to know really who is right. I think there is no doubt at all that TB is rife amongs badgers and its very likely they are passing it to the cows
whether Culling will work is really not known there are good arguments for and against so in my view its worth a trial and see if it does help.

Bovine TB is a huge problem and if culling badgers in some areas alleviates it it should be carried out in my opinion.

By the way to indicate that animal lovers should stop the cull is also simplistic - I would class myself as an animal lover but it doesnt stop me eating them or taking steps to prevent spread of a disease that was directly responsible for the slaughter of over 18000 cattle in the first 6 months of this year

I am afraid I wont be signing a petition as there is a good chance not culling badgers will be worse for the dairy industry and by definition cows than reducing the numbers

My sentiments exactly. The sad thing for me is that the badgers are being held accountable for the biology that dictates they carry the disease. To demonise them is wholly wrong. I don't know enough about the subject but is it not possible to initiate a program of vaccination/innoculation in the badger population? After all, what happens after the cull? They will either decline perrmanently as a species or recover to the same levels they are at now. With the cull achieving only short term goals.

I heard Brian May on the radio this morning and I listened to the 'your call' on radio five which focused on this. I have to say that after listening to all the facts and theories presented I find myself supporting the Brian May camp.

In a nutshell he stated that loads of other countries had conducted these culls (he named a few) and the results proved it didn’t work whereas in Switzerland they didn’t cull, they did some kind of inoculation programme and the results were much better. I was working and on the phone so I didn’t catch it all so if my facts are a little skewed I’m sure somebody will correct me.

Problem is its just as easy to find someone in the pro cull camp who will point to evidence that it does work. If it really is proven not to work I dont understand why there would be such a strong group in support of a cull. Then again if its Defra behind it you are probably right

Yes but innoculation would presumably take effort and cost money, when in reality its just easier for the authorities to give farmers a licence to blast the creatures out of existence.

Watch last Sunday's Countryfile on iplayer for a decent feature. The proposed cull will take place over two counties to test the effectiveness on, in this case, the infection of neighbouring dairy herds. The problem lies not with the indigenous badger population, but with the densely populated and aggressive animal agricultures. Dairy herds are more confined because the profit margins are less, but until people reduce their consumption of meat, these problems will not go away.

I was gobsmacked by an interview with one of the 'hunters' - "We had to go for very detailed and complex training - It was a long day."

    I despair, I really do.

I have to say my gut instinct is against a Cull(unless it were absolutely proven to work),I'm not an expert on the subject at all,
I just wonder why this is suddenly a problem,Badgers have roamed the countryside for millenia along with Cattle, why is it so serious now? The other point thats crossed my mind, evidently Deer contract the disease,in view of the fact we have the largest deer population for centuries, perhaps the Deer could be a factor.

Having spoken to my brother who is quite an avid wildlife enthusist and often spends evenings watching badger sets at dusk to spot the young (perv!) I am of the opinion that this won't work. No firm proof has been put forward, I don't believe, that the cattle are being passed it from badgers. Also, why not just innoculate the cattle?
My other issue - on the radio they asked one of the people who was responsible for the culling and he said they would cull 70% of the badger population but when pressed he had absolutely no idea how many badgers there were in the area and said "well, we just take 70% of the area and kill all the badgers in that area". Now, I wonder how much of the overall area will include housing estates etc so they'll just say we'll put that in the 30% that we aren't going to do which will lead to them destroying close to 100% of the population.
It's absolutely scandalous when this is a protected species, but then it's a Tory government and farmers are wanting this!

It is pointless and I will tell you why

There's no such thing as badgers. They don't exist. They are a conspiracy theory.Put it this way - have you ever seen a badger? And I mean a live one, not the dead stuffed ones that the government leave on the roadside to make you think that badgers really exist.

    Wise up.

I honestly don't know enough about this, but if there are two available options - cull or inoculate - and there is no consensus on which will work, then surely it would be worth trying the one that doesn't involve killing?

    Fully agree.
Badgers are like lesbians - they simply don't exist.

Since coming onto this site I have found there are some sensible people on it but the greekman does not come into that scope. A Badger has more sense than him. We probably watched him on Telly hunting defenceless animals. All animals are under threat nowadays from the pressures of the modern world and need to be protected. cattle are a commercial product and all commerrcial stock will get priority. DEFRA should allow a vaccination policy on badgers first then on cattle. Take Poultry when fowl pest and
bird flu was a topic. Poultry are not vaccinated compulsory but racing pigeons have to be. What stupidity.
