I see that a far right group in Germany want to ban the burka. It's a view held by quite a few people and has been discussed before but I still don't understand one thing. Why? Why would anyone care what another person wears? Banning the burka in certain situations similar to the ban on motorcycle helmets for security is a different issue, a none issue really because it's common sense.
Security and safety as you say, but I read a study by some eminent psychologist relating to certain occupations eg. teaching where inter personal communication is inhibited by lack of visual cues e.g. facial expression and body language which impacts upon effectiveness of, in this case teaching. It also can lead to 'trust issues' on a subconscious level. I suppose the latter could be a minor contributor to the slight unease of many Westerner when confronted by women wearing burkas.
A) A least one known criminal has escaped justice in the UK wearing a burka. B) Less sunlight on the body causes rickets etc. C) it is not in European to cover up like that. When in Rome......
A) Then we need to ban hoodies and many other things including gloves B) That is nothing to do with you C) That is nothing to do with you
Removing a woman's free choice to wear what she wants and forcing her not to wear a specific item of clothing has the opposite effect to what you suggest. It is akin to banning skirts because they objectify women
Can it be described as a uniform and thus lead to a ban on all uniforms (or just those we don't like).
I keep going back to this image but this is Cairo University. Look at the women. None of them have their heads covered. The hijab has nothing to do with Islam, the burka even less. The burka is a symptom of Wahhabism, the ultraconservative doctrine of Islam promoted by Saudi Arabia, the same doctrine that has given rise to ISIS. The thought process that decrees women should dress like that is the same one that promotes violence and hostility. We should fight it wherever we can. I'm not sure a ban is the correct way to do it, but we should challenge the notion that this is normal. It is not.
I fully agree with that. Effort should be put in to educating people on religion from all sides. At school 'western' kids should be taught about the peaceful side of Islam (and other religions) just as I was when I was at school but at the same time history of these religions should be taught including showing the young girls that they do not have to wear these things. It's not just Islam either, kids should be shown that all religion should be about peace and comfort and there should be efforts to show the similarities between all religions rather than differences.
It's not quite as straightforward as that though....the same photos can be seen in Kabul or Tehran in the post war era but we are looking at the Intelligentsia... look at photos taken in rural areas and more traditional dress , often including Burka's could be seen.
Problems with burkhas: Women voting more than once. Women sitting driving tests for other women. Women sharing bus passes. They can be intimidating to other people especially children. Other general security issues including bank robberies, criminals fleeing justice etc
Problems with hoodies: Women voting more than once. Women sitting driving tests for other women. Women sharing bus passes. They can be intimidating to other people especially children. Other general security issues including bank robberies, criminals fleeing justice etc
You can get hoodies with a face cover ? either way there's no reason religious or otherwise that you can't request they put a hood down.
