Barnsley FC become the 22nd club to formally support the Football Supporters’ Federation’s Safe Standing Campaign.

“Barnsley Football Club work tirelessly to make Oakwell Stadium a ‘supporter friendly stadium’. We recognise that some of our supporters would like to stand at our games in a safe and controlled environment."

Really hope something comes of this. I like to stand to watch my football, and I know many others do too. Those who want to stand in a safe environment should be alowed to do so, and those who prefer to sit have the right to sit and watch the game without being obstructed by others.

I feel we should have the choice to stand in a safe environment, or sit without being obscured or forced to stand.

It makes me proud that BFC are backing the views of it's fans.

No. Rather we spent money on the team rather than changing a stadium we've spent millions on changing in the first place.

In no way shape of form or any other way you want to dress it up... Standing should not be allowed. Having being at Hillsbrough when Liverpool and Forest played and witnessing the aftermath i think standing should be banned indefinitely
If you think that the Idiots who constantly stand in the Beckett stand and annoy the fans who sit behind them are right then please let them have their own little pen to stand in .. preferably in the open corner where the TV presenters sit.

Plenty of standing sections in Germany, never a problem.

Would definitely help the atmosphere to have a standing section.

Standing wasn't the problem though..it was the fact that they were fenced in with nowhere to escape

It was both with standing the primary cause. Had the area had seating in then there would not have been such a crush as it would have been impossible for them to wade through seats and rows

If standing annoys you then why not sit in any of the other stands where people never stand up?

I don't think thats completely relevant...no fencing and there wouldn't have been a problem, apart from people safe on the pitch

I don't see how it would be a viable business model for us. Presumably we'd have to spend quite a bit to rip out the seats, modify the terracing and install crush barriers. And I guess we'd charge fans less to stand up, that being a primary reason people give to bring back standing. We might bring in a few new customers with a standing area, but predominantly it would be existing customers moving from the seated areas.

So we'd have to spend on updating the ground in order to charge our customers less money. I can't see Don going for that.

Don't crushes form when there are large surges even when there aren't any obstacles in their way? Don't forget that even without the fencing there would still be the wall at the bottom which we have now.

I don't see how we could morally charge people less for standing. They'd surely have to charge them more to cover the cost as somebody would have to pay for it and it would be grossly unfair to expect those using the existing, cheaper to install, seating to pay for the upgrades.

The only way I see it being viable at Barnsley would be if it was part of a new west stand, other than that it's a complete no go

I don't think football ticket prices are set on a morality basis.

Good idea though. Do three selfless good deeds this week and get £5 off your match day tickets.

I held the door open for a pregnant lady on Monday night and gave an homeless man 50p. Now I only need to do one more for me £5 off. But if I do another 'selfless' good deed in the knowledge that it will get me a discount does that mean that it is no longer selfless as I'm doing it knowing I gain from it?

I think you'd charge them exactly the same since it's just preference.

Surely it can't cost that much to install barriers, certainly less than it would seats. Of course it would cost the club money but it would result in a better atmosphere making it more attractive to fans so you might get a few more in. A better atmosphere would help the team finish higher up the league. I reckon you'd recoup your losses eventually.

You'd probably alter the right side of the Ponty depending on how many people showed an interest in standing up.

Give three different homeless people 50p and you save £3.50. You're onto a winner.

It would cost an absolute fortune to rip out the seating, alter the gradient of the stand (dont think it's even possible), install barriers, install new expensive seating and so on.

Only cost effective way of doing it is during a new build.

It looks like a 20p but it's much bigger
