just been to see my grandad told me a short but funny story about the tyrannical ginger moustached policemen stood on the road into Barnsley, when he was very young himslef, long before the days of the Alhambra. I'm not sure of he was there or whether it was only his father but still funny. The bobby was directing the traffic and a man put on his indicator (presumably accidentally) while placing his hand against the windscreen to indicate he wanted to go straight on. The policeman asked "which way does tha want t' go?" The man said he wanted to go straight on, still not realising he was indicating left. Upon this, with no warning, the bobby asked, "well what's this fo' then?" And qucikly reached down and snapped the indicator clean off! as they flipped away from the side of the car at this time. Would never happen now because he would probably end up getting taken to court.
Well I remeber the Tachy coppper often Bottom of New street used to to go in tracky Bus stn canten fora cuppa when i was a trcky driver
Funnily enough my grandad was in a real story telling mood area and also mentioned an old friend of him and his dad's who was a tracky driver, can't remember the name unfortunately I was only talking to him an hour ago (doh), but he was driving under the bridge at Stairfoot and the bobby there (not sure if it was the famous one) didn't get out of the way quickly enough and the bus ran over his toes!
1959/60 I had one of the new Austin mini's I drove past the said Bobby just as he had put his hand up to stop ongoing traffic. (Going a bit fast to stop). As I drove past he banged the top of the Mini with his fist. Thinking it was better to face the music I stopped by the side of the road and walked back. When there was a break in the traffic he came across and holding my ear rarther tightly said "next time tha does that I'll hook thi thru,t winder, nah F off and watch what tha doin" I had a sore ear for a bit, but I often think that was far better policing than a great fine and points on your licence. I dont mind admitting it he was definitely one of my heros after that.
RE: Funnily enough tha Know, these stories sound to uncanny familar to me when he was on duty i used to put my hand thro the window and give him a goody he never refused i would like to think they still ar e making them like him
