Wasn't £6 million spent on this only 8 years ago, and half of its being knocked down/dug up. Seems a waste of council tax payers money for this extreme case of failure to plan.
a new £24 million interchange is being built, looks awesome: http://www.barnsley.gov.uk/remakingbarnsley/viewGallery.asp?PID=12 Anyone know when it will be built?
It looks horrible The random pastel colours are very 70's and most other towns are trying to get rid of them.</p> [img=http://www.barnsley.gov.uk/remakingbarnsley/gallery/interchange_6.gif]</p>
RE: It looks horrible I think the designers use power macs. They were struggling for ideas, then they saw this:
RE: It looks horrible I ask again, what is a Digital Media Centre? What benefit can we expect from it?
RE: Thats what I want to know. what is one? I thought the town was being redesigned as a Tuscan Hill village! Doesn't look very Tuscan to me.
RE: Thats what I want to know. what is one? "Barnsley's track record for innovation and for new technology will be enhanced by the building of the Digital Media Centre. The “DMC” will be built on the lower Courthouse Car Park, with parking replaced elsewhere on the site. It will be one of a number of new digital industry and learning developments which will link together with the Barnsley Business Innovation Centre and bring this important sector into the Town Centre. The DMC will provide a town centre hub for this important economic sector and will then support further development around it ofnew businesses and space for them to occupy. The Courthouse site will, over time, house further such developments and enhanced College facilities. In developing the DMC, the Council is working with Barnsley Business Innovation Centre, Barnsley College and other partners. Work on site is due to begin in March 2006." http://www.barnsley.gov.uk/remakingbarnsley/viewProject.asp?PID=14
RE: Thats what I want to know. what is one? Don't know about you I'm an old codger,58, so I'm sure some young whippersnapper will put us in the picture.ff
RE: Thats what I want to know. what is one? Digital industry to get £10million business centre A new £10million state-of-the art centre to support companies in the creative and digital industries is to be built in Barnsley after securing major funding from Yorkshire Forward and the European Union. Yorkshire Forward is to invest more than £6million in the Barnsley Digital Media Centre - which will have more than 70 business units, conference and meeting facilities, a technology showcase area and an internet café - with almost £4million being provided by the European Regional Development Fund. As well as offering tailored facilities for creative and digital companies, the centre will also provide mentoring and business support to new enterprises. Almost 90 businesses and 200 new jobs are predicted as a direct result of the centre, which is to be built on part of the town’s courthouse car park. Across Yorkshire and Humber, the digital industries “cluster” of companies employ more than 110,000 people. In South Yorkshire, there are more than 2,700 companies employing more than 21,000 people. Jim Farmery, Head of Technology Infrastructure at Yorkshire Forward, said: “The Barnsley Digital Media Centre will be a space where digital companies want to be. It will be a vibrant community for companies to grow, develop new ideas, to collaborate and innovate. “The Digital cluster is an area forecasted for strong growth and this investment is a key part of our strategy to boost this sector across South Yorkshire.” Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, which owns the land, will be responsible for building the centre. Renaissance South Yorkshire, the sub-region’s regeneration company, will manage the delivery of the project, which will provide almost 4,000 sq metres of space. The Council is in the process of appointing the design team, including an architectural practice, to assist in the development of an iconic, environmentally friendly and energy-efficient building. Flexible business space, ultra-fast broadband internet connections and a series of networking events to help companies share ideas will form part of the project. Cllr Bill Newman, Cabinet spokesperson for Development at Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, said: "This is an excellent piece of news for the town. It will enhance Barnsley’s growing reputation as a centre for creativity and digital enterprise. It is yet another indicator that the Remaking Barnsley programme is being successful in attracting outside interest and funding." Building work is expected to start on the centre in September and the first companies are expected to be moving in by September 2006.
i'm 22 lol All I can work out is that it is basically an office block which will have a few fancy gadgets in it and they'll hope to attract high tech digital companies. No doubt it will fail
RE: so an office block with broadband I think its more to do with the business and technical support services provided by bbic. These centres are usually quite impressive, I think the one in huddersfield does quite well, even though its nowhere near the scale and size of the barnsley centre. I think this is a good step in getting new digital industries to locate in barnsley instead of the surrounding towns and cities.
What about the markets? As designed by mickey mouse [img=http://www.barnsley.gov.uk/remakingbarnsley/gallery/market_4.gif]
