From todays Yorks Post BARNSLEY manager Simon Davey is still hoping to sign striker Jon Macken on a permanent basis despite the shock of his premature return to Derby. Davey also wants to sign Derby defender Lewin Nyatanga, who is on loan at Oakwell until New Year's Day, but may have to wait until an injury crisis at the Premier League club is over. Derby manager Paul Jewell invoked a recall clause in Macken's loan deal yesterday after Welsh international striker Robert Earnshaw picked up an injury in the Boxing Day defeat to Liverpool. Macken had scored three goals in his last two appearances for Barnsley and his all-round contribution has impressed Davey since his arrival 11 games ago. Davey said: "It is not ideal but we may have a chance of getting them (Nyatanga and Macken) back. The uncertainty about whether players are going to re-sign is the difficult part of the job so you have to be second guessing clubs and be prepared." The future of Brazilian midfielder Anderson De Silva will also have to be resolved following the expiry of his loan deal from Everton. Barnsley entertain Southampton seeking a first win in five games. Only five points adrift of the top six, Barnsley's results have exceeded expectations and Davey is determined to finish the year on a high. However, he is still not losing sight of the fact that consolidation rather than promotion was always his goal. "We are only five points off the play-off zone but we have also got to be mindful that we are only 10 points off the bottom. If we can mirror our start to the season in the second half, there would not be a person in Barnsley disappointed at us turning up 12th on May 6."
