People on the interweb pretending to be GS. Much umbrage. Andrew Lodge's daughter won a dancing competition on the east coast - it was lovely. Barnsley are at home to Walsall tomorrow.
Chairman confident club is on track to reach its goals Barnsley Chairman Gordon Shepherd has not ruled out the arrival of more new signings but has warned fans that that the club will remain careful with its spending. Some supporters have been calling for the board to "splash the cash" but Shepherd reveals that is not an option. "I would not feel comfortable doing that,i think we have to build solid foundations, like a pyramid. We have to start from the bottom. Some companies build from the top and what you find is those companies topple over. And although by starting from the bottom you do not expand as fast, what you will do is still be strong through difficult times and you will not get knocked off course. We are not in a position to go out and buy several new players but I have always said that if Andy (Ritchie) wants a particular player then the board will examine ways of achieving that. That doesn't mean there are going to be more players coming in, it just means that the board will do its best to try and get that player if we can. It has to be within reason though. We cannot afford players out of our range. We are what we are and we have to be realistic but we are all fans and we want Andy to have the best squad he can". More to follow as I need a break, my wrists are aching. (angel)
he said this BARNSLEY FC Chairman Gordon Shepherd has moved to clarify the Reds financial position after announcing a £3.5m loss for the year up to May 2004. Speaking exclusively to the Barnsley Chronicle, Mr Shepherd said: "I think we have to build solid foundations, like a pyramid. We have to start from the bottom. Some companies build from the top and what you find is those companies topple over. "We are not in a position to go out and buy several new players but I have always said that if Andy (Ritchie) wants a particular player then the board will examine ways of achieving that. That doesn¹t mean there are going to be more players coming in, it just means that the board will do its best to try and get that player if we can. It has to be within reason though. We cannot afford players out of our range. We are what we are and we have to be realistic but we are all fans and we want Andy to have the best squad he can." "I cannot see us being self sufficient by the end of this year and I don¹t think it will be by the end of 2007 but each year the losses will get smaller. Considering what we have had to do, that timeline is not unrealistic. I am cautious by nature and I do not like to run my businesses with a high risk strategy. I like to sleep at night. "We are getting to a manageable level. By that I mean we are not haemorrhaging money at a fatal rate any more. The club's financial forecast is for the team to finish outside the play-offs and to exit all cup competitions at the first hurdle".
Part 2 Last week's BFC report for the Business year 2004 revealed a loss of £3.5 million for the year after administration and the chairman has predicted the club will continue to lose money. "I cannot see us being self-sufficient by the end of this year and I don't think it will be by the end of 2007 but each year the losses will get smaller. Considering what we have had to do, that timeline is not unrealistic. I am cautious by nature and I do not like to run my businesses with a high risk strategy. I like to sleep at night." Although the club have reduced losses dramatically over ecent months, there are still areas of concern for our chairman. "Our wage budget is in the top third for this league. It is at the bottom of that pile but still, it is in the top third. We still have players who are on contracts previously set up but wages in this business is a high proportion of the revenue." Despite the chairman's need to remain cautious, there are clear indications the club is slowly but surely heading towards a brighter future. "We are now owed more than we owe, which was not the case last year. The revenue from season ticket sales was more than the previous year and also we have more revenue from sponsorship than last year. We still cannot afford to be laying out lumps of money for whatever reason. We cannot build a new stand or sign a £1 million player. It has to be bite-size chunks." Shepherd will celebrate a year in charge on Christmas Eve and fortunately he was not under any illusions about the task in hand. "I knew it would be a long job. Stuff appeared that we were only partially aware of. We knew of it but did not know the extent. We are getting to a manageable level. By that I mean we are not haemorrhaging money at a fatal rate anymore. We had to apply a touniquet. I am working towards applying a plaster but at the minute I would say we are using bandages." The clubs financial forecast is for the team to finish outside the play-offs and to exit all cup competitions at the first hurdle. That way, the financial future is not dependant on promotion but Shepherd revealed it would be a boost if Ritchie's Reds could reach the FA Cup third round. "We have budgeted to go out but it would help with finances if they could reach round three. We have not had many games at home. The Preston and Burnley games in the carling Cup were away and taking all the expenses and everything into account, we made about two and nine pence. It would be nice to get some home games, not just for financial reasons but for the fans too. It would be a bit embarrassing thrashing Manchester United at Old trafford. I would not know what to say to their chairman, I would be so apologetic."
