No doubt I will get abuse for this but here goes.... First I must say I have not visited Oakwell since before the debacle with 'he who must not be named'. I was interested in comments by a number of fans though, regarding the 7-0 drubbing yesterday and the fact they "did not care because the team had already done what was needed". Many of these fans are no doubt the same ones who accuse the club of lack of ambition. A professional in any field, especially those working in a job they purport to love, whether highly paid or not (and lets face it, they are highly paid), should ALWAYS give it 100%. I suggest to those fans who think that yesterday performance was 'no problem', that had they been under the surgeon's knife, and that surgeon had reached his quota of successful operations for the year, would they be equally happy for the surgeon to 'throw in the towel' and adopt a 'slap-happy' approach. "They had nothing to play" for!! What about self respect? What about the thousands of BFC fans who pay hard earned money to support their team? What about the people who have ploughed good money into keeping BFC solvent? I would say that any fan that believes yesterday was OK show as little ambition as these so-call professionals. Do you believe for one minute that someone like Roy Keane or Alex Ferguson would have considered that acceptable regardless of what stage of the season they are at? We were fielding reserves etc. will, no doubt, be the excuse. Sorry, but that argument does not hold water when you watch these minnow international teams who field part timers - postmen etc against international superstars and they dont roll over. If these players are on the payroll and deemed good enough for a 1st team place then they should be professional enough to crumble and be beaten by a Championship side who whilst OK are not exactly runaway title winners destined for great things in the Premiership! Anyone would think the lost to Milan or Barcelona! I am afraid Barnsley football club, manager, players and from what I have read here a number of 'fans' show a complete lack of ambition. Being realistic is one thing, accepting mediocrity is another. I will always support a team and players who give 100% even if they dont have a great deal of talent. Time and again football rewards players like that. The Premiership promotion side did not have many household names but the team typified by Neil Redfearn gave 100% and more and success followed. Some of the current team e.g. Nardiello have talent but that is not enough in football or life in general. Turning it on and off when they feel like it (Sheron?) means that the player can make a cushy living without too much effort. Players drinking in the bar/clubbing between games FFS. These guys are well paid 'athletes' and if you want to do something to the best of your ability you make sacrifices. Some of these losers want it all! That is why I no longer go to Oakwell ! Some of you might say -good riddance' to those I say "The feeling is mutual." To those long suffering fans who put up with it all - I salute you and hope the day will come where you have a team worthy of your loyalty because most of the current squad and management dont deserve you. Good luck for 07-08!
Nor does a 7-0 thrashing in front of loyal fans..so there you go. Since many footballers gets paid (as opposed to earns) about the same as many surgeons and in some cases a lot more the analogy regarding professionalism is OK.
For the vast majority of this season The players have given 100% and that it why we have stayed up. Staying up in this division was the only realistic ambition for the club this season. I hope the ambitions are higher next season. I think basing an argument on one game with an under strength team forms a very weak argument.
Actually I agree If I was to say " well I have delivered all my loads of steel on Monday thru Thursday, I think I will **** about on Friday, no-one will mind cos everyone got their deliveries earlier in the week" , I cant see my employer being very sympathetic when I tell him it didnt matter. well said tekkytyke you are not alone and its good to see that someone else can see that the club lacks total ambition.it will be interesting to see if (mr £48million avid barnsley fan cryne)dips into his pocket to aquire any players,i doubt it very much.
RE: What should Barnsley's ambitions be? right answer this.if you had in excess of £48 million in the bank, and a avid barnsley fan, would you watch your club struggle or would you ensure that sufficient funds were available to buy players.i know my answer,a good propertion would assist the club.cryne is not the god you all think he is.
RE: What should Barnsley's ambitions be? From what I understand PC's stepped in on a number of occasions and put money into the club. What is important is not that we are bank rolled but we actually start to stand our own feet financially. This is what the board wants. I don't want the club beholden to a benefactor who could withdraw that support at any time and leave us in a financial mess. How would you like it if I told you how to spend your money?
If it wasn't for Cryne there'd be no club! He didn't make 48 million by throwing it away - if you look at the 442 rich list in football a lot oc clubs have millionaires on their board but not many throw millions at the club - one the Spurs directors is worth nearly £1 billion but they don't throw their money around
Championship football is our level the odd near escape from relegation and occasionally flirting with the play offs.
He's already put millions into the club. The club should be self sufficient and not rely on one man. We you put your savings into the club.... Thought not
Tekkytyke. Ambition is based upon setting goals. Our goal this season was to remain in this division. This has been accomplished. Next year we i would guess we are hopefully looking toward mid table with hopefully a few cup games. For a guy who hasn't been for a while would a win have seriously changed your mind about BFC. I think not!. you are one of the many people who are not happy if you are not grumbling about BFC and what they should do. Last year was promotion, this year consolidation next year hopefully mid table. BFC will now struggle to compete with the big boys in our division but at leasst we are there to try. As i have said yesterday was not good but the presssure was off and subsequently the performance matched. One game does not make or break a season. we met our goal and this should be applauded not criticised. Get real we are Barncsley FC, if you want to support a team that wins most weeks try Man U. They may have ambition in your sense but eh semi finals of the European cup may not be good enough for some people!
If you don't go to the games*, your opinion is invalid. *Exceptions: if you genuinely can't afford it, if you live far away etc. Not going because you don't like what's being served up means that your opinion doesn't count. Tekkytyke: See you when we're back in the Premiership.
I'm sorry mate but you are just making yourself look silly by pointing the finger at Patrick Cryne. This guy has done more than any other Barnsley fan in recent years and he has gone about it in the right way.
No, no, no, no, no. Unfortunately, to me, the comparison is, and has always been, with Spackmans first season (well part of it)and with the Portsmouth game and the way the team is developed over the coming months is of vital importance towhere we finish next season.
By the way, it's pretty common knowledge that the team were well hungover for the Oxford game, if that was the case for the WBA no-show then a certain defender who wasn't picked should be pretty pissed off!

Slawit! - As one who has attended practically every home and away game this season... - I fully agree with Tekkytyke's viewpoint. Aims (or objectives) that are set should be challenging and in my opinion, 4th from bottom was not challenging enough for BFC. I suspect last season the objective was to push for promotion, we got that via the play-offs and most fans would agree we over-achieved in doing that. So why settle for '4th from bottom' this season? Why not settle for mid-table? True - we aren't playing on a level pitch, the ex-Premiership sides have a big advantage on us in terms of player skills, wages and the like. And yes, one game does not make or break a season. However, I (like many other travelling fans) expend a lot of time, money and effort following the team - and I certainly expect that team to put similar effort into their performances throughout the season - right until the last minute of that season. I totally accept the viewpoint of those that say yesterday's game was meaningless, and the 7-0 defeat didn't matter. That's not to say I agree with it - to me, yesterday's game meant a lot. I follow my team expecting them to win every game. I realise of course that there is no way that is going to happen but when they do lose I expect my team to fight for every ball and show the same passion that I show in supporting them. Yesterday that did not happen, and dismissing that as 'what the f***, we're staying up' (as was chanted at the game) simply does NOT excuse what occurred on the pitch. The whole issue here, in my view, is one of expectations. If the club indicate that '4th from bottom' is acceptable, ultimately the fans will accept that as well. A natural progression is that the players fall into that mindset also. Just because we are Barnsley FC does not mean that we can't aspire to top 10 in the Championship, or promotion or the Premiership again. Colchester certainly set their aspirations higher this season and look were they ended up - on a lower budget and fanbase that us, I might add. Accepting what happened at the Hawthorns yesterday shows, as Tekkytyke says, a lack of ambition by the club, the players and the fans. To keep it at our level, do you think Ian Holloway or Ian Dowie or Roy Keane would have fobbed off a 7-0 drubbing in the final game of the season - even if that match had no bearing on promotion or relegation? I applaud everybody at BFC for their efforts in keeping us in the Championship this season - I don't applaud them for, nor accept, yesterday's performance and I certainly hope the objectives set for next season will be far more challenging than mid-table mediocrity. Winners breed success and yesterday we all seemed to accept second best.
RE: Slawit! - As one who has attended practically every home and away game this season... Well said mate
