Never a truer word spoken. A bit harsh on the 'relegated so miserably' point but otherwise I think he talks sense.

Bassett led Barnsley to the Championship play-off final nine years ago only to suffer defeat against Ipswich Town at Wembley.

Since then, the club has never threatened to re-create the magic of the 1997-98 season when Danny Wilson's side, having won promotion, mixed it with the game's elite.

"The problem with Barnsley is that everyone got carried away when Danny Wilson took them into the Premier League," he says. "When I was manager, I soon got the feeling that too many people felt it was now a Premier League club.

"They had lived the dream but they had conveniently forgotten how the club was relegated so miserably. Some people at Barnsley have the same difficulties as Newcastle United fans. They think of themselves as a 'sleeping giant' when in reality they have won bugger all down the years.

"There was talk of Simon Davey going this summer but I am glad he has stayed and hope he takes his opportunity. A reality check was needed because since Danny Wilson left they have sacked a ridiculous amount of managers.

"Barnsley will struggle again in the bottom half of the table but I don't think they will be relegated. There are worse teams in the division than Barnsley – the likes of Plymouth, Scnuthorpe, and Blackpool.

"It is important they get some points on the board quickly rather than leaving it to the latter stages of the season when they are languishing down the bottom. Their away record last season was flimsy to say the least."

    Fair comment I suppose

But was there something that sparked this little outburst or is he just going senile?

    Very true

although comparing us to Newcastle is a bit much!

We've never been a big club some people's expectations are incredible.

17th is good enough for me.

Relegation I'll be upset, top half I'll be delighted.

But realistically Mr. Bassett is saying the logical thing

It's not what I want, It's not what I hope and prey for.

But it is all I expect.

And if I get more I will be grateful for 18 Saturdays with my mates at the pub watching footy rather than pounding the floors of the supermarket

What a lovely person - even when he was manager he used to say "Barnsley" rather than "us" then he got rid of de Zeeuw

Of all the anti-Davey brigade (myself included) I can't think of anyone who expects us to be challenging at the top end of the table but we might as well make out we are if it makes us look that bit more unreasonable.

From the straw poll that is this website it seems we're turning more and more like dem darn 'Illsbro'.

'We should be signing him. He'd come here instead of Blackpool. Etc etc.'

How dare he compare us to Newcastle fans? Blo0dy fuming reading that. I don't know anyone who regards this club as a 'sleeping giant'. One thing about supporting Barnsley - our feet are kept firmly on the ground. No daft talk of 5 years and we'll be in Europe crap.

Are the days of being optimistic about a new season gone, if every club in our position gave up and settled for second best we may as well not bother.

"since Danny Wilson left they have sacked a ridiculous amount of managers"

I'd challenge anyone to argue against that.

    We've sacked some ridiculous managers

Spackman etc, but at long last we seem to be fighting against the replace them every 10 minutes policy.....

In spite of Davey deliberately weakening the squad like.
