The Official Barnsley Football Club Facebook page has 13,946 'likes', which is quite good. It is not the worst in the league- Charlton has 12,339, Peterborough has 13,000 and Bristol City has just over 10,000 I know we are not a massively supported club but more needs to be done to advertise the club off the pitch via social media sites. Clubs such as Burnley (20,000 likes) and Palace (22,000) are not a million miles away from our fanbase but have bigger followings on their Facebook pages. Here are some ideas on how to improve Facebook, and Twitter, publicity in order to promote the club to the younger generations who are obsessed with social media and also to the older ones who are just getting used to it! 1. Don't just post links on the Facebook page - people often simply cannot be @rsed clicking on links taking them to external sites. Instead, take a few minutes to write a couple of paragraphs explaining the story and encourage comments and 'likes'. 2. Introduce competitions - other club sites have competitions such as 'share this article to your personal profile and you will have a chance of winning a signed football by the first team players'. This helps to spread the word and gets people involved. This can also be used to promote the games when we reduce the tickets, such as the £11.50 game we had a while back. It has basically no cost from the club, and even if one ticket is bought as a result of the Facebook advert then the club makes a profit. 3. Crowd photos - it is good to see yourself in the crowd! The page should upload crowd photos so fans can 'tag' themselves and so the word is spread to different profiles as it comes up on the news feed. I am not saying the Facebook page is sh@t, it just can be used better in order to promote the club by interacting with its fans in different ways. I am not saying that every Facebook fan goes to the games, they dont. The page can be used to attract new facebook fans who can look at what BFC offers and be tempted to go down to Oakwell to cheer on the Super Reds! Opinions?
Email the ideas to markstokes@barnsleyfc.co.uk The club did competitions when the stupid fanpowerstadium thing was on.
You make a fair point there I think. I especially think that the crowd photos are a good idea, i've seen loads of other clubs do them. Just summat simple that gets people interested
