I went to the exhibition at Barnsley town hall yesterday which got me feeling all nostalgic so I dug out some Barnsley FC memorablia - mainly old programmes and the like. The programmes date from 1977, when I first started going to watch Barnsley. Then there are programmes from the 1950s/60s, when my Dad watched the Reds, then most interesting, stuff collected by my Grandad post-war. So there are some programmes from 1948/49 with Tommy Taylor in the team, who I imagine was our greatest ever player. Also found a signed photo of Arthur Kaye from that period, and some autographs from Mick Mcarthy and Ronnie Glavin. Anyway, just wondered what people had on here in the way of interesting Barnsley FC memorablia?
Programmes going back to 1978 Signed team sheet of 1997 promotion team Signed shirt worn by Peter Shirtliff in the Bradford promotion game
Programmes from the mid sixties onwards, various shirts I bought my son over the years,2 signed footballs, one from the Glavin Banks era another from the days of Payton etc and Chris Morgans boot he wore against Man.Utd in our last Premiership game.
Dave watsons right hand glove. He threw it into crowd away at southend in mid 90's. Last game of season. We just missed out on playoffs that year. Cracking day out. Defo best days out in my lifetime were away games. Full day sesh and watch the reds. Good times.
My sister once had Carl Tiler's shin pad. From the day we got into the play offs, but didn't. Premature celebration-tastic.
Red and white Barnsley scarf knitted by my mum in 1975 Granville Firth's book signed by Alan Clarke Programmes 1974-81 A few framed pics of oak well from various eras.
Pictures of Oakwell from the 80's with Glavin and Banks. Loads of programs including one from the 60's. A few books as well
Istvan Ferenczi's match worn away shirt from 2008. He arranged to meet me at Toby Carvery to give it me! Turned up with Marciano Van Homoet.
Far too much stuff than I have space for! My favourite bits and pieces are a player's rules and season ticket from 1928, containing such club rules as no dancing after Thursdays and no smoking in the dressing room, my first official replica Reds shirt which I got for Christmas in 1980 or 1981 (obviously no longer fits me) and my programme collection, which consists of every home programme since 1954 apart from 5 (still searching for those) and I've almost got at least one away programme from every team we've played against. There are just a few obscure non-league teams we've played in friendlies that I am missing, although it's difficult to know whether programmes were printed for many of the friendly games we played going back to the 80s and beyond. My main gripe about modern day programmes is how big they are. They just take up far too much space and, by and large, they are filled with rubbish that's not worth reading. I'd much rather have them slimmed right down to the size they were 30 years ago. My prize possession though is the present my missus got me for my 40th a few years ago. It's number 1 of 10 large framed prints of the famous 'Blood Red Wall' photo that the great photographer Stuart Roy Clarke took. It's a fair old size and is up in our kitchen, so I get to see the wall behind the old Ponty every morning at breakfast. My mate Dave has a similar one in his kitchen and there's a smaller version in the Director's Lounge at Oakwell, so there must be another 7 out there somewhere. Stuart had kept number 1 himself but destroyed his copy to make mine, as he had promised there would only be 10 in existence. It's possibly his most famous photo and if you don't know his work take a look at his website, homesoffootball.co.uk. He's taken lots of Reds related photos over the years and he took quite a lot over the past couple of seasons that are currently on display at the exhibition at the Town Hall, so if you haven't been to it yet get yourself along. You may even be on one of them, but you'll certainly at least know someone on one of the photos, because they are all of the Reds crowd.
I've got the white Barnsley Chronicle leather football Neil Redfearn kicked into the crowd at our first ever premiership match. For a few games that season every starting player would leave the tunnel with one of these balls and kick them into the stands. My uncle got the one Eric Tinkler kicked into the crowd a game or two later. It's rather flat though so would need blowing up.
I have Chris Morgans boot from the last game in the premiership, if there was to be a charity raffle for memorabilia I'd be happy to see it go to raise money for a good cause.
I've a signed, framed Premier League shirt b the majority of the 1997/98 squad, which incidentally I need to sell to make space in the gaffe for our new arrival, if anyone wants to make a sensible offer....
I've got brendan o'connell, Lee butler, Chris Morgan (premiership) shirts. Also got Ashley awards premiership shirt framed. Got Paul Cross shirt he wore in masters tournament, and every home and away programme from 1978. Got Nicky laws shin pad somewhere in loft
I've an old autograph book, the one the club used to seek years ago which you could buy the little passport size photos to stick in it. Not so much anything out of the ordinary, but there's a little bit of a story behind it. Before the game my dad used to buy me a photo for my autograph book, I had quite a few pictures in it, but only a couple of signatures. So my dad took me and my brother to watch the players train one day, in the hope I could get a couple of names in my autograph book afterwards. The lads were playing a small sided match (7 a side I think) on the training pitch when a very wayward shot from Arjan De Zeeuw hit my 3 year old brother square in the face. Afterwards Arjan signed my autograph book and got the majority of the team to sign it too, including Neil Redfearn which I was over the moon about as he was my favourite player.
I only collect autographs really so not much memorabilia but when i went to Paul Malcolm's house he gave me a training top he used to wear signed by him. My grandson is the collector he's only 8 but last season Dale Jennings gave him his boots he'd worn all season and Christian Dibble his shirt. The season before he got Ruebens boots he'd worn at Huddersfield and one red boot off Marlon Harewood at the last home match.
