a)What is the greatest number of hat ticks you've seen in any one season for Barnsley ? and b)What is the greatest number of goals you've seen scored in a single league game by a Barnsley player ?
That's what I was thinking But the answer to the second one for me would've been David Currie's 4 goals in the 5-2 win over AFC Bournemouth in November 1988 .
I could only remember Two seasons when I'd seen 3 hat tricks scored :- 1974/75 - Peter Price ( 3-0 home win vs. Southport in January ) & Mick Butler ( 4-3 away win vs. Newport County and 5-3 home win vs. Rochdale in successive matches in March ) ; 1978/79 - Brian Joicey ( 4-2 home win vs. Halifax Town in August ) , Allan Clarke ( 6-2 home win vs. Port Vale on Boxing Day ) & Tommy Graham ( 4-1 home win vs. Scnuthorpe United in March ) . I can't remember any others , not saying there aren't any though .
I can think of only two that season by Chopra Home wins against Peterborough in December ( 4-0 ) & Hudderfield in January ( 4-2 ) . I don't recall any others by Chopra or anyone else .
wrong indeed.....! Bournemouth, won 5-2. Any anoraks out there remember who hit the 5th for us though.....?
Sorry! he did get four though in a game - remember that bit. Mind going funny in my old age! (seestars)
RE: Sorry! We beat Reading 5-2 the season before I reckon, after being 2-0 down after five mins. Don't remember the scorers on that day though as wasn't there. Still remember the Bournemouth match clear as day, as my dad had promised me that Currie was going to break the club scoring record and hot five. Imagine our dismay when clean through at 4-1 up he squared the ball to Dobbin for possibily the only time in his ball-greedy career........!
Remember Dave Watson getting a right telling of by one onf the coaching staff that day, held onto the ball for what seemed like an age when Southend had most of their players in our box, everyone including the coach wanted a quick ball upfield, Watson holds on and sends the ball down the wing with most of their guys back into good positions. Coaching staff stands up and has ago at Watson just as Williams completes his hattrick. Coach shuts up and sits down very quickly.
I don't remember who hit the fifth But the first was by far the most offside goal I have ever seen given! Currie was somewhere between 8 and 10 yards offside (no exaggeration) and I can only imagine he was so far offside that as the linesman watched for the ball being played, Currie was actually outside his field of vision. Whilst I wasn't complaining it was the worst piece of linesmanning (is that a word?) I have seen in 20-some years of going to Oakwell and, by crikey have we seen some shockers over the years! Utterly staggering.
