I know it gets slagged off by some but I have been on the children's care unit since last Friday since my son was born

Unfortunately he's been treated for meningitis but pleased to see he's responding really well to antibiotics

    Hopefully out for next Thursday

The staff are second to none

Pleasant , helpful and above all extremely hard working

They have let all 3 of us sleep on the ward and looked after us like kings

If anybody deserves footballers wages it's these people

Sorry to ramble but I thought they deserved a mention

Hope your kid makes a speedy and full recovery, pal.

My missus works in the NHS, she's overworked and underpaid, but they do a terrific job despite David Cameron's best efforts.

My dealings with Barnsley hospital have always been fantastic....it annoys me when people slag the NHS off, they do a great job for what they get paid!! You tell me another country where you can walk in off the street and get fixed free off charge.......!!!!

I agree BL. When I was in last year the staff there, the nurses in particular, were amazing. Best wishes to your little one, I hope he's OK.

I have to agree never had any problems with the NHS and Barnsley in general , the past week they have made us feel so welcome , like others have said times like this you realise what a fantastic and privileged country we live in , took him on the hospital grounds for the first time today felt amazing , the feeling we get when he gets sent home will feel just as good as when he arrived in the world

Thanks for all your lovely messages will keep you all updated

Best wishes to you little one BL

My mother was in the stroke unit last year and sadly died but the care she received was superb and for that all my family were eternally grateful!

    They do a wonderful job

All the best Barnley Loyal. He'll pull through. Theses people are angels. Lifesavers.

My lad was on SCBU in Harrogate for 8 days when he was born. The longest and hardest days of my life. He's now a fighting fit 4 year old condemned to a life of misery following the Reds.

Hope your little 'un gets sorted pal. Worked at the hospital on two occasions and had the surgeons knife 6 times. Sometimes we only appreciate what we've got when we need it. Best wishes fella.

lucky for you that you have dropped on a time when its ok. Hope everything goes ok for you bud! :)

when our son was born in may the place was fit to burst. he was a day old and came down with jaundice and it was a catalogue of errors from start to finish. So much so they completely forgot to do his blood test, then half way through his examination by the peds they all just dropped us and went off to another call and completely forgot to chase his bloods till when they came back his levels had risen in the the danger zone was showing requiring a blood transfusion. 8 hours they f*cked about till he was critical. He was all floppy and verging on suffering brain damage etc. Ended up racing him under as many UV lights as they could find - which wasnt enough. It was awful.

The ward was like a lunatic asylum with kids screaming out all night - sounded like someone was having their limbs torn from them. He needed special baby unit care but cos hed come off the ward they made him go on kids ward. It was horrid. There was one nurse on all night and machines going off left right and center. They didnt know how to use the incubator and i ended up having to work it out and do it myself - and also provide his care. It was an absolute joke. Almost two weeks we spent on there with us taking it in turns to provide his care and ensure his eye mask didnt come off etc. and change his nappies. Also only the mother got any food so i had to keep going home to eat - almost crashing the car from exhaustion. Also found out if the mother doesnt breast feed they wont feed the mother either! Shocking that.

They didnt have a clue what they were doing half the time. They had him and us in a right state for a couple of months till he finally got the all clear and it was only when we damanded the transfer his care to Leeds that they actually smartened their act up.

I was going to complain through the proper channels as we have all the written apologies in his notes from all the **** up but never got round to it. I lost a stone in weight in a week through worry and no sleep.

The odd time we got a nurse from special care to cover as they had no nurses free - that we had someone that actually knew what they were doing the difference was amazing - but we still had to do most of the care ourselves.

Would not want to go back to that first couple of weeks again.... Didnt feel like we actually had hi as a small baby as he was in the incubator etc most of the time.

At least hes ok now! :) Proper little star he is and luckily there seems to be no after effects from the dangerous levels of bilirubin in his blood stream. However we will have to see in the future as there is evidence it could have an affect on behaviour, ADHD etc...

Some people will have good experiences, some bad, in general university hospitals like the ones in Sheffield are better because they have the best doctors and expertise.
